Christopher Reeve's Life and Work on Behalf of People with Disabilities is Chronicled in a new Comic Book for Children

Christopher Reeve is the subject of the latest edition of the "Chip Tracer" comic book series. "Chip Tracer: Cyberjournalist" is a children's comic published by Newsday featuring female super-hero Chip Tracer, who works at the Newsday office at the Newseum, the interactive museum of news in Arlington, Virginia.

In this issue, "Triumph of Spirit: The Christopher Reeve Story," Chip travels back in time to explore Christopher's childhood in New Jersey, his years as a top Hollywood actor and star of the "Superman" movies, and then his accident. Using both photos and expertly-drawn illustrations, "Triumph of Spirit" gives readers an in-depth look at Christopher's life.

Although targeted towards children, the comic frankly discusses the gravity of Christopher's injury as well as important, and even controversial, issues related to spinal cord injury. Chip recounts Christopher's thoughts of suicide that followed his accident, the difficulties of his care and rehabilitation, and the frustration many people with disabilities feel when trying to get their insurance companies to cover their treatment.

Chip travels to meet two scientists, Dr. Barth Green of the University of Miami School of Medicine and Dr. Reggie Edgerton -- a CRPF-funded researcher at the University of California at Los Angeles. Chip learns about the advances in spinal cord research that have Christopher confident that someday he will walk again. She explores Dr. Edgerton's breakthrough treadmill therapy that taps the spine's "memory" and has great promise for people living with paralysis.

"Triumph of Spirit" offers children an interactive experience. There are colorful diagrams that visually explain the spinal cord and the injury Christopher sustained. There are word balloons above the characters' heads that readers can fill in with what they might say in a situation that Christopher has encountered. And readers are encouraged to write letters to Christopher and submit sketches of a superhero to fly with Christopher and Chip.
