August 28, 2000: No More Adventures with J.M. DeMatteis
WizardWorld reports that "Adventures of Superman" writer J.M. DeMatteis, has re-evaluate his work schedule and decided he will finish work on the monthly Superman title with issue #587. Writer Joe Casey of Wildcats fame, will do the dialoge for DeMatteis' last issue, taking on the reigns thereafter.Editor Eddie Berganza told WizardWorld, "I'm really sorry to see J.M. leave. He's a real pro to work with, and hope we get to do so again real soon."
The writer explains: "I've been buried under a huge comics workload lately (Adventures, Spectre, four issues of Wonder Woman, a 96- page Green Lantern graphic novel, a 64-page Superman, a 48-page Supergirl, a Legends of the Dark Knight arc)...and then found myself involved in a movie project, as well. Something had to go in order for my sanity to remain intact... and, after Eddie and I discussed it, we decided Superman was it.
"I, frankly, felt constrained by the monthly continuity that prevented me from doing the kinds of stories I really wanted to do. Eddie, too, felt that something wasn't clicking for me creatively... so this seemed the ideal opportunity to bow out gracefully.
"I've thoroughly enjoyed working with Eddie and we have every intention of continuing to work together on Superman material. We're just shifting my Superman focus to one-shots, graphic novels, mini-series and the like. Stories that can stand outside of current continuity and give me the breathing room I need.
"Once my workload lightens, we will begin work on a very cool project, involving Superman, and I can say no more," DeMatteis teases.
Casey comes onboard with big shoes to fill and a lot to catch up on, but Berganza notes, "Joe's a new, fresh voice in comics which is in keeping with what I have been striving for in the Superman books--to make everything feel new and to be looking to the future.
"Now, I just gotta keep my Joe's straight. Thank goodness for Mark Schultz!"
