Steve Younis at the 2000 San Diego Comic Con

July 28, 2000: San Diego Comic-Con Report

Well it's good to be back! Anybody miss me? :) I had a fantastic time in LA and especially at the San Diego Comic-Con, but as Dorothy said, "There's no place like home!"

Now I've been to Comic Conventions here in Sydney Australia, but none of them come close to what I experienced last weekend in San Diego. It was huge! I walked around for the first couple of hours like a little boy in a candy shop, rumaging through comic boxes, wandering aimlessly from stand to stand.

But first off, I checked out the Fandom stand. Next to the DC Comics and Marvel stands, this had to be one of the best looking and crowd pleasing stalls at the Con. People were just fascinated with the Money Vortex, a clear plastic booth that contained money and paper, whirling around in a windy vortex. When registering with Fandom at the Con you received a raffle ticket, and each hour on the hour a ticket would be drawn and the winner would get 10 seconds inside the Money Vortex to grab what money they could.

Fandom's stand at the 2000 San Diego Comic Con Finally, once I'd walked around a bit, I came to the DC Comics stand. There I managed to meet and chat with Mark Millar (who used to write the Superman Adventures comic book), Grant Morrison (who wrote JLA), Mark Waid (JLA), and current Superman creative team members Jeph Loeb and Joe Kelly. All were really great guys and were happy to spend a few minutes talking with me. Jeph Loeb and Mark Millar are regular visitors to this site and read the Superman Homepage "Mild Mannered Reviews" for their particular issues.

Other than meeting these great guys, the highlight of my time at the San Diego Comic-Con was the "Stump the Fanatics" sessions we held at the Fandom stand. People from the crowd surrounding the Fandom stand got to ask trivia questions to the various Fandom "Head Fanatics" on their particular subject (obviously for me it was Superman). If the Head Fanatic could NOT answer the fans question, then the fan would win a prize (toys and action figures). I had a ball! I managed to answer 99% of the dozen or so questions thrown my way, really frustrating some of the Superman fans in the crowd. :) It was a whole lot of fun, and one of the fans came up to me afterwards to shake my hand and have a chat.

All in all I had a great time! Maybe I'll see you there in 2001? You never know.
