June 20, 2000: Ed McGuiness Signs One-Year Exclusive Contract

DC Comics is pleased to announce that Ed McGuiness -- best known for his current work on SUPERMAN -- has signed a one-year exclusive contract.

Teamed with SUPERMAN writer Jeph Loeb since SUPERMAN #151, McGuiness' work has become synonymous with the high-energy excitement and cool new look that the Superman core titles have been enjoying this past year, drawing accolades from readers, retailers and critics alike.

According to McGuiness: "Working on SUPERMAN, I'm having the best time of my career; why would I want to go anywhere else? Working with the Super-Group of writers, editors and artists, I'm a part of a real creative force. And Jeph [Loeb]'s got a great sense of what I'm good at; he writes his scripts around my strengths to draw the best things out."

With a bold yet deceptively simple style, McGuiness' work on WildStorm's MISTER MAJESTIC (with current WILDCATS writer Joe Casey) showed a fluid dynamism that perfectly complements the rollercoaster-action stories being told in the Superman monthly books. Says Superman Editor Eddie Berganza: "He brings a young and bold new style to the Man of Steel that retains the classic sense of the character as well as evokes the popular animated style. In one artist, I get the best of both worlds."

His experience on MISTER MAJESTIC allowed McGuiness to cut his proverbial teeth on a classic super-hero style book: "I thought MISTER MAJESTIC was as far as I'd get to an icon like Superman! Drawing Joe [Casey]'s over-the-top take on a 'Super-character' with all the sixties-style cosmic stories was also the best preparation a guy could have for working on Superman. The transition between the two was actually easy -- intimidating, of course, jumping midstream into the legacy of this icon -- but I really felt ready for Superman."

McGuiness is also spearheading the look of the upcoming "Superman: Arkham" storyline, contributing the covers to all four issues. According to McGuiness: "The playing-card covers for SUPERMAN ARKHAM were a blast; I finally got to draw Bizarro! I'm a huge fan of the Superman Adventures animated show, and there's a great version of Bizarro among its 'Rogues Gallery'. Now, working on SUPERMAN, I get to take my shot at Bizarro in this twisted-reality setting."

Berganza agreed wholeheartedly, saying: "This am least favorite part of crossover. We get Bizarro done wrong finally!"

McGuiness' work can be seen every month in the pages of SUPERMAN, as well as on all four covers of July's "Superman: Arkham" storyline, featured in SUPERMAN #160 (MAY00 0116) arriving in PZ stores July 6, ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #582 (MAY00 0117) arriving in PZ stores July 13, SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL #104 (MAY00 0118) arriving in PZ stores July 20, and ACTION COMICS #769 (MAY00 0119) arriving in PZ stores July 27.
