New “Icon” TV Spot for “Superman” Movie

The DC YouTube channel has posted a new TV spot for the upcoming “Superman” movie.

“Superman,” DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.

DC Studios heads Peter Safran and Gunn are producing the film, which Gunn directs from his own screenplay, based on characters from DC, Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

The film stars David Corenswet (“Twisters,” “Hollywood”) in the dual role of Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (the “X-Men” movies, “Juror #2”) as Lex Luthor. The film also stars Edi Gathegi (“For All Mankind”), Anthony Carrigan (“Barry,” “Gotham”), Nathan Fillion (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, “The Suicide Squad”), Isabela Merced (“Alien Romulus”), Skyler Gisondo (“Licorice Pizza,” “Booksmart”), Sara Sampaio (“At Midnight”), María Gabriela de Faría (“The Moodys”), Wendell Pierce (“Selma,” “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”), Alan Tudyk (“Andor”), Pruitt Taylor Vince (“Bird Box”) and Neva Howell (“Greedy People”).

“Superman” is executive produced by Nikolas Korda, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars Winther. Behind the camera, Gunn is joined by frequent collaborators, including director of photography Henry Braham, production designer Beth Mickle, costume designer Judianna Makovsky and composer John Murphy, along with editors Craig Alpert (“Deadpool 2,” “Blue Beetle”), Jason Ballantine (the “IT” films, “The Flash”) and William Hoy (“The Batman”).

“Superman” will be in theaters and IMAX nationwide on July 11, 2025, and internationally beginning 9 July 2025, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Um… I’m concerned. The first trailer had a polarizing effect. Some liked it, some hated it. I didn’t like it, but had hope it would get drastically better closer to release. All the YouTube channels seemed to be divided as well. But either way the new spot, even those who were really happy with the first trailer seem to be really dogging on the new ad, especially the s ene where Superman is flying toward the camera. My GF thought it was a parody. Not cool. I truly hope they cut that part from the movie. It just didn’t land… Read more »

What do you mean with “polarizing effect”? The teaser had an overwhelmingly positive response from audiences. Even the top-rated comments in videos from DC and WB had expressing optimism for this movie.
It is true that there are detractors but that doesn’t take away that people are excited for this movie.
I’m not trying to put words in your mouth or anything like that. I just think you should be a bit more mindful of other people’s feelings.

And this is where James gunns refusal to change has bit him. While I think the story is going to be good and we’ll get good performances, he absolutely should have gone with a different cinematographer and with a different composer. I don’t understand his refusal to do so. Superman can’t look like the flash or a marvel movie, he has to stand out and look different visually especially if you’re jump starting a new universe. That shot of him looking like Adam warlock is dodgy man. I don’t know how else to say it. I was not a big… Read more »

Update: and it looks like he’s already started to defend the look of this online, so this will most likely be the final product.

Unfortunately, I’m generally skeptical (yet hopeful) of this new movie. Worried that the plot will be overstuffed and too many other characters involved. If this Ultraman or whatever is some kind of clone, than that’s also underwhelming and tired of Superman simply fighting the same beings with the same powers as past movies. But that one is an unknown so can’t fault it yet. There’s a ton of pressure on this movie for this new universe as Gunn has stated himself. Will anything less than a billion $ be seen as a failure? And a failure for the character or… Read more »

I share a lot of your concerns as well! And fandom these days is so unforgiving these days when you voice concerns… I’m tired of voicing an opinion and being labeled a Snyder bro (I can assure you I am not), or as someone that has to just accept everything that’s put in front of me just because it’s Superman related. I’m a die hard fan and find things to love in every version of Superman, but that doesn’t mean we as fans can’t be critical of paths and decisions that are made. It’s the same as being a fan… Read more »

Exactly ! It’s not a zero sum game. We can be critical of certain elements without hating the whole or only preferring what came before without accepting a new direction. There’s plenty of room for nuance with all of it and I think nuance is exactly what is needed in general. And I especially dislike when creators double down without ever contemplating whether the critique has any validity. (not that Gunn is doing that in this case since we can’t read his mind) We all want this to to be a grand slam, which is what can make it so… Read more »

Maybe it works differently in a comic book, but in a movie, Supeman needs to have a dragon to conquer. He needs to overcome a physical challenge so that the story’s stakes feel believable. I know some people are gonna say that “it’s the Man part that matters, not the Super”, but general audiences are, well, generally attracted to the power fantasy Superman represents.
Superman has always been big on action. Even if the Christopher Reeve movies featured Superman needing to overcome a physical challenge, whether it’s a natural disaster or an enemy superhuman.

Maybe you should watch this and you’ll have a better idea for the backlash.

It’s not a flattering shot to David at all because it’s a wide angle lens. Which makes it look like he has a go pro on and it is distorting his face. If I were in the editing room, I would maybe re/evaluate and say to myself, ‘okay maybe this isn’t the best shot’. The lead up looks great where you see the cape, but this just seems off. This is not me saying that the movie is going to not be good as a result. I do think David is going to be a great Superman and I’ve heard… Read more »

You can’t get a total anything from trailers. I’ve never seen ANY of these trailers past and present that were actually an indication of how the finished movie will turn out.

In saying that from a personal level, it’s going to take quite a movie to turn my attention away from Snyder’s take. I thought he did an ultimate job with all the DC characters. Want I do NOT want to see is,…. “kiddy” Superman.
