Neva Howell Lands Dream Role as Ma Kent in Upcoming “Superman” Film

A small-town Georgia actress is about to make her biggest splash on the silver screen this summer when she takes on one of the most beloved maternal roles in superhero cinema.

Neva Howell, a veteran performer from Dade County, Georgia, will portray Martha “Ma” Kent, Superman’s adoptive mother, in the highly anticipated new “Superman” film hitting theaters July 11. For Howell, who has been acting for over three decades, this represents the pinnacle of her career.

“This film, if I’m going to be in a Superman film, I am so glad it’s this one, because it has more heart and such a beautiful, beautiful heart that I’m proud to be part of this particular Superman,” Howell shared with News Channel 9, her excitement evident when discussing the project.

From Rejection to Redemption

The path to landing this iconic role wasn’t without its challenges. When Howell first auditioned about a year and a half ago, she had no idea she was reading for Superman’s mother. The revelation that she had secured the part felt like vindication after years of near-misses in Hollywood.

“That made up for a lot of rejection. I’ve come close before, very close and didn’t get it, so for this to happen… up until we went to film, I was thinking, this is not going to happen, but it did,” Howell reflected.

The moment director James Gunn delivered the good news remains etched in her memory: “James Gunn called me over and he said, ‘I don’t want you to have to wait. We want you to be our Ma.’ And I just kind of fell into him. I was so shocked.”

Crafting the Perfect Ma Kent

To prepare for the role, Howell immersed herself in character development with methodical dedication. Gunn provided her with an audio recording of a Kansas farmer’s wife to capture the authentic tone and accent he envisioned for Ma Kent.

“I listened to it over and over and over every day for months. That was the main thing that gave me the flavor of Ma,” Howell explained. She also drew from personal experience, blending memories of her stern but faithful grandmother with her mother’s gentle, unconditional love to create her interpretation of the character.

A Career Built on Persistence

Howell’s journey to this breakthrough role spans an impressive resume that includes appearances in popular TV shows and films such as “The Originals,” “Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide,” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” After training at acting school in New York and spending years in Los Angeles, she eventually returned to her Georgia roots, where this life-changing opportunity found her.

Understanding the Weight of Legacy

Howell is acutely aware of the significance of portraying Ma Kent, a character deeply cherished by Superman fans worldwide. The responsibility isn’t lost on her as she prepares for audiences to see her interpretation of the woman who helped shape the world’s greatest superhero.

“I think so much of it depends on the fans, you know. So I’m just praying and hoping that they know that I didn’t take it lightly, and that I know how much this role means to them, and I just hope they like her,” Howell said. “If they do like her, I think my life’s about to change.”

As July approaches, moviegoers will have the chance to see how this Georgia actress brings her own heart and authenticity to one of comics’ most important maternal figures. For Howell, it represents not just a career milestone, but the realization of a dream that seemed impossible just years ago.
