Jon is in Smallville where he has been tasked by Lois to act as a journalist for the Smallville branch of the Daily Planet. He is supposed to find stories without the use of his superpowers. While doing this he is also working with Steel and Lana to test out their new technology’s ability to inhibit the affects of kryptonite on kryptonian physiology. He soon discovers that many farmers and workers are going missing, and the source of the missing people is an underground civilization that has been disturbed by digging. Steel, Superwoman, and Jon help bring peace between the undergrounders and the above grounders leading to Jon’s first big story.

4Story – 4: I really enjoyed this check in on Jon’s life. Though I do have a major gripe with this issue, and that’s how terrible Lois and Clark have been as parents since the Rebirth Era. I mean how many times have they tried to ship Jon off to let someone else parent him? Crazy Jor-El? Sure he can raise their son. Dangerous future with the Legion? Why not? And now they just send him off to be raised by the Kents. Does DC not have any writer who would like to write Lois and Clark as parents?

I do appreciate that they are finally giving him some forward momentum, but I would prefer if they let him create a unique life for himself. One unfettered by the Kents in Smallville, or the Daily Planet. Let someone come in and create a world for him.

The story itself has a strong Silver Age vibe, which I don’t mind in small doses. I like seeing John Irons and Lana together, but I much prefer Smallville to be separated from the zaniness and action of modern Superman adventures.

4Art – 4: Meyer does a good job replacing Albuquerque on this issue. The action scenes are engaging, and the faces are crisp and clear.

2Cover Art – 2: This cover doesn’t work for me. It is too dark, and the primary face looks odd.

4Variant Cover Art – 4: This cover looks cool. The metallic reflection of the sun off of Superman’s costume is an interesting look.

5Variant Cover Art – 5: This cover looks gorgeous. Sampere’s art is incredible.

5Variant Cover Art – 5: A very engaging cover that is also relevant to the overarching story. This Superman is ripped and looks cool.

4Variant Cover Art – 4: This cover looks very epic, the kryptonite growing out of his face evokes a great sense of the danger that he is experiencing in this current run.

Do you know what my gripe is with Jon Kent’s stories? That every time there’s space for a Jon Kent story, it pushes Conner out, and vice versa. Conner was supposed to be living with the Kents, as per the latest development on his stories, and now he is not there. While I understand from a legal and copyright standpoint why they needed to make Jon grow and call him Superman (soon the original Superman will enter the public domain and having a new Superman around gives them certain level of protection about using the name and likeness of the… Read more »
