The story starts back on Earth-Prime with Barry Allen returning to see his new wife, Iris. Because of his injury and his honeymoon Wally West steps up to take his place on Monsterverse Earth.
Along with their Monarch liaison the team and Mercy Graves, the team of Mr.Terrific, Cyborg, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Martian plan their next moves to help protect the Monsterverse Earth from Task Force X and King Ghidorah.
While Godzilla has retreated into the Pacific Ocean to heal, King Ghidorah is calling an army of Titans to him, including Rodan, Mantleclaw, and Behemoth. To face this threat the team splits up. Aquaman and Mr.Terrific go to the Pacific to find Godzilla. Green Lantern and Flash go to confront King Ghidorah. Cyborg and Martian Manhunter remain with the Monarch team to help coordinate with the rest.
With Batman missing, the remaining heroes Superman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman have followed Kong to Hollow Earth and to the location of Lex Luthor. Luthor and the remaining members of Task Force X are initiating Phase III which is a more controlled version of the Titanizing growth serum.
As Kong and the Justice League team approach the mountain command center of Task Force X, they are greeted by a Titanized Cheetah that quickly neutralizes the team. Cheetah realizes quickly that Kong is not as easy a mark. However, halfway through the fight Cheetah is distracted by the alpha call of King Ghidorah, in which she answers leaving the battle. Kong and Luthor give chase leaving Leland Lafayette Shaw III and Black Manta fighting over their next move. But before Shaw can make good on his threat to trigger the Suicide Bombs, Black Manta strikes, killing Shaw.
The story ends with the Apes of the Hollow Earth and their king Skar answering King Ghidorah’s call. Skar King is riding the ice titan Shimo converging on King Ghidorah’s location with the rest of the Ape’s in tow. In response Martian Manhunter enters the battle against King Ghidorah.
Story – 4: A very busy, but very good issue. Brian Buccellato turns it up in this penultimate issue of Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2. Bringing together some of the coolest aspects of the Monserverse as well as a great use of Martian Manhunters abilities. Another great story point is Hal Jordan using Wally West as not only a mode of transport, but an opportunity to catch some nice waves with a windsurfing construct.
Art – 4: It is all about the Titans for Christian Duce, but Duce’s sequential storytelling ability is also emphasized in two great pages featuring Kong.
The first page and a half is all visual storytelling with no dialogue needed. Introducing us to Hollow Earth, the first panel is tight close up on Kong. Panel two is the reveal of Hollow Earth with Kong looking out towards a mountain in the distance. Panel three has Kong moving towards that mountain. Panel four is another tight panel with a close-up on Kong letting us know he sees something. Panel five is a large shot of Kong reacting to whatever he sees.
Page two panel one is the largest panel of the sequence. The panel reveals what Kong sees, a large door at the base of the mountain. Panel two of the second page is another tight Kong reaction shot and the first panel with text. The text lets us know that Kong is not alone and that he is being accompanied by Superman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman, and that the door Kong found is the location of Luthor and Task Force X.
Cover Art – 3: Christian Duce’s cover image is inspired by the 2017 Skull Island movie with Kong rising up with mountains and a setting sun in the distance. But instead of troops and helicopters on the attack it is a Titan which we cannot but know is a threat. Fortunately, Kong has some help in the form of Wonder Woman and Supergirl.
There are variant covers by Carlo Pagulayan, Alan Quah, and Lucas Meyer.
Carlo Pagulayan. This is a great cover featuring heroes in the foreground and Titans in the background. Both the heroes and the Titans look great.
The next Quah variant is another in the series of connecting covers; it features Aquaman, Mister Terrific, Black Manta, and Captain Cold. The featured Titan is Mantleclaw with other lesser Titans including a hoard of Skullcrawlers.
The next Incentive Cover by Kevin Maguire (1:25) features Mechagodzilla as the story’s Suicide Squad including Giganta, Lex Luthor, Enchantress, Harley Quinn, King Shark, Captain Cold, Peacemaker, and Cheetah work to defeat him.
