The story starts with a cold opening, throwing the reader right into an all-out fight in the Justice League Watchtower; a fight that Gorilla Grodd and Inferno are winning. Despite being less experienced and out of time, Inferno has an amped up Grodd, chronal displacement guns, and Grodd’s wildcard, Pythoness; a sorceress who “died young” and has no counterpart in the current era.
After successfully displacing the Justice League, Grodd makes his way to the Omega Rift on the Watchtower. The Omega Rift is the place where Darkseid was “killed” during the “All In Special”. Grodd seeks the power of Darkseid, but the rift is volatile. Grodd’s solution is to use a fragment of Apokolips to safely siphon the power radiating from the rift, or that is what he leads Inferno to believe.
The Justice League who is spread throughout time cannot communicate with each other, but someone else is trying to communicate with them. Initially defensive, they find they are being connected to each other by Air Wave. The Justice League listens, and the Atom concludes that Inferno did not kill Air Wave. They instead weaponized him to help disperse the League through time. And that’s not all! Air Wave realizes that if he could be used to scatter the League, maybe he could reassemble them together again. At first, it seems to work, but Air Wave realizes that he and Grodd are still connected. Air Wave seems to lose control, but ultimately did Grodd and Air Wave destroy each other?
Story – 4: Since the last issue of “Justice League Unlimited”, there has been a “World’s Finest” issue and a “World’s Finest Annual”, both a part of this crossover. Those two issues focus on the younger Superman, Batman, and Robin and give us some insight into the formation of and the relationship between Gorilla Grodd and Inferno.
This is a great cliffhanger from this, the penultimate issue of the crossover. Overall, “We are Yesterday” is a story with high stakes, but at the same time there is a lighter feel, which equates to a fun story. People are dying and being hurt, and we know that if Grodd is able to channel the powers of Darkseid, then all of humanity is indeed, threatened.
This story is trying not only to wrap up “We are Tomorrow”, but also to tie up many of the story points that started with issue one of the series. With this issue, “We are Tomorrow” is also bringing forward story points from the “All In Special”. It seems that by the end of the crossover, the league should have more details about the fate of Darkseid that will lead us to the next chapter of the All-In story.
Art – 5: Travis Moore continues to impress in art. There is a nice panel where Air Wave is talking to the time lost heroes all at once. The panel showcases the heads of twenty-two heroes, each well drawn and unique. In this panel, the characters are more realistic-looking than in the main story, but still, it does not take you out of the story. While still realistic, the rest of the art has some more cartoony panels, which just work great in a DC comic, helping to bring a fun tone to the story.
Cover Art – 3: Another Dan Mora three-part connecting cover for this month’s three crossover issues. This is the second piece of a Legion of Doom focused cover. This cover spotlights Gorilla Grodd, Joker, Lex Luthor, Black Manta, Cheetah, and Sinestro.
There are variant covers by Tiago Da Silva, Ejikure, and Yanick Paquette. The Da Silva cover is hyper-realistic and spotlights Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Star Sapphire, Black Lightning, and Blue Beetle. The Ejikure cover features the Trinity with a more anime style. The Yanick Paquette also features the Trinity, it is best best of the three.
There is also an AAPI Heritage Month cover by Cliff Chiang featuring Doctor Light. Finally, there is a cool “Supersmash-up” cover by Jorge Molina with the JSU, all with a Superman-inspired design. This cover features Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Black Lightning, and Star Sapphire.
There are two Incentive Covers: Travis Moore (1:25) and Phil Hester (1:50). The Travis Moore cover is part one of a two-part connecting cover. This is the best of this month’s covers. The Phil Hester cover features the Arrow family, A great cover for Green Arrow fans.
