Once ten now seven (Mr. Terrific, Doctor Fate, Aquaman, Batman, Superman, Owlwoman, and Gold Hawk) have made their way through hell to the River Styx. Their passage across however costs more than just the traditional tokens.
To pay each team member is forced to give up something of significance to them. Batman a Batarang, Owlwoman a cryogun, Gold Hawk a Nth Metal Medallion, Doctor Fate their Learned Bracers, Aquaman his harpoon hand, Mr. Terrific his sense of Fairplay, and Superman his sense of Hope.
A Justice League Unlimited evacuation task force composed of Kid Flash, Martian Manhunter, and Dr. Occult are at a standstill just outside Oklahoma City. Their progress is being delayed by the last remaining conclave of Super-Villains under the control of Neron. Red Tornado is working to send a backup team for support but the Justice League Satellite’s Boom Room is unresponsive.
Without the support of a full team the evacuation task force must make due with only the added support of Mary Marvel. As the team arrives in what should be the most treacherous spot on the planet they find only the peace of suburbahell. The out of the ordinary they do find is an abnormally green church and a field of gravestones.
Inside they find the church of Neron led by the demon-powered-up super villain Atomic Skull. Trying to save the innocents looking for salvation the task force find their four on one advantage quickly vanish as the “Holy Army of Neron” arrive. This is compounded by the Justice League Unlimited’s Boom Tubes and now all the earth’s evacuation crafts are failing. This creates loss of not only the chance for backup, but puts the lives of all the Earth’s evacuees at risk.
And back in hell the crossing of the River Styx is anything but placid. Aquaman is the next team member to sacrifice themself for the mission of the team. In an attempt to control the sea monsters of the River Styx.
Story – 4: Mark Waid delivers a fantastic installment to Mr. Terrific’s stygian sojourn into the underworld to find the demon lord Neron. The Terrific Ten, Part Three focuses on the teams passage of the River Styx. The remaining stellar seven are faced with the loss of their most valued assets, and ultimately the loss of another companion.
Art – 4: Dan Mora makes this book great. And the best page is the revel of Charon the Ferryman of the River Styx. Emerging out of a pitch black passage, we get the reveal of the Ferryman and his boat in a one-third plus panel. In the next three consecutive panels we see Mr. Terrific attempting to pay the Ferryman for passage. The final quarter-panel formally introduces the hooded Charon and his reaction to payment.
Cover Art – 4: A good Dan Mora cover. A good storytelling cover featuring Neron choking Electric Blue Superman with Owl Woman watches helplessly.
