With the Titans tasked with leading the evacuation of Earth, the remaining untapped members of the Justice League Unlimited, a skeleton crew, are left to track the Neron-powered villains.
While in hell, Mr. Terrific is leading a team of time-displaced heroes in an assault on Neron, bringing the fight to him. It is a team that knows they are expendable because they exist at this time and place solely on borrowed time.
The first creatures they face are the Demons Three. Power Girl and Guy Gardner buy the time needed to allow the rest of the team to escape, but at the cost of their lives.
Their next encounter was a Snake demon girl. Mr. Terrific challenges her to a game of riddles. The defender of Fair Play’s riddle is actually a logic puzzle, buying time that the team uses to breach the demon’s gate. Their escape, however, is not clean as Green Lantern sacrifices himself to allow the rest of the time needed for the team to escape.
While the team has passed two sets of barriers, they have already lost three members. Can they reach Neron before all are lost?
Story – 4: The Demons Three, Mark Waid pulled this one from the earliest days of the Justice League of America. Issue #10, to be exact. Released in March of 1962 in a story entitled “The Fantastic Fingers of Felix Faust”. In the story, Felix Faust calls on the powers of the Demons Three. He hopes that once they are free from their prison, they will empower him with supernatural power, the means to rule the Earth.
While the Justice League has defeated the demons multiple times. The Demons Three, Abnegazar, Rath, and Ghast, are now on their home turf in Hell. And they are only the first of many of Hell’s barriers the team must face.
Art – 4: Dan Mora shines in his depiction of Hell and its demons. What is The Terrific Ten facing? Dan Mora treats us to a double splash page of the team face-to-face with Abnegazat, Rath, and Ghast the Demons Three, along with their items of power, the Red Jar of Calythos, the Green Bell of Uthool, and the Silver Wheel of Nyorlath.
Cover Art – 4: Even by Dan Mora standards, this is a busy cover. It features the time-displaced team of Mr. Terrific, a version of Batman, and the Flash’s Rogues.
There are variant covers by Marcos Martin, Lentil Francis Yu, Jeff Spokes, and Salvador Larroca.
The Marcos Martin variant is an excellent cover featuring the Trinity. The simple color scheme and character design make up for the interesting choice of having only Batman’s face of the three clearly shown.
The Leinil Francis Yu variant is a stylized scratchy cover. This great team cover features Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, and Batman.
The Jeff Spokes variant is the second in a series of connecting covers. This cover features the left arm of Superman, Flash (Barry Allen), Black Lightning, and The Batman.
The Salvador Larocca variant is WOW. It spotlights two members of Mr. Terrific’s time-displaced team, Batman Beyond (Tim Drake) and Electric Blue Superman.
