The story starts with secondary members of the Justice League in the process of evacuating the cities of Earth. The most powerful members of the Justice League are away in the tournament, leaving the rest of the League to continue on. While for the most part, the citizens of Earth are following in line, it seems that some of the low-tier villains have been powered up and are taking advantage of the chaos.
With the villains amped up, Mr. Terrific is reminded of the past event known as Underworld Unleashed, where the demon Neron exchanged powers for souls. Mr. Terrific believes that with this universe-ending event, the villains have again made a similar deal, allowing them to escape the ultimate destruction.
Mr. Terrific’s response is a plan to create a special team to attack the problem’s source. His team is comprised of time-displaced Justice League members who have been stuck since the events involving Gorilla Grodd and Inferno. The team is made up of a past Aquaman, a past Power Girl, Guy Gardner Warrior, Superman Blue, Gold Hawk of the planet Andrino, Tim Drake Batman, Alan Scott Green Lantern, Sofie Doctor Fate, and Owl Woman from Justice Legion Alpha in the 853rd century.
After giving the team some time to relax, Mr. Terrific takes the team to Hell.
Story – 4: While the “DC K.O.” event is speeding up, this book seems to be slowing down, but that is not a bad thing. Waid is using this opportunity not just to tie in to K.O., but to build out the event. While the main “DC K.O.” will be following the tournament, “Justice League Unlimited” will be focused on the time lost heroes left over from the “We Are Tomorrow” story, and maybe even the time lost team led by Legend created in the “Justice League: Dark Tomorrow Special”. So Waid is neatly following up on some loose story threads that he has been setting up recently in “Justice League Unlimited” and its adjacent specials.
Art – 4: Dan Mora is back. It is just amazing the amount of work that he is doing, not only at DC but other places too. Some of his best work and storytelling in this issue is three pages spotlighting Aquaman. Each of the members of Mr. Terrific’s special ops team is given time of their own before the start of the mission. Aquaman chooses to spend that time reviewing the virtual files that the satellite has on his main Earth counterpart. He sees the history of his counterpart, the good and the bad. But most of all, the good, Andrina, his daughter.
Cover Art – 4: Another busy Dan Mora cover. Instead of choosing your own adventure, you get to choose the DC Hero you want to focus on. Your options are Mr. Terrific, Justice League Unlimited’s hook Aquaman, Electric Blue Superman, Batman Beyond, or a feral Beast Boy. There are other elements to overload your senses. Including Mr. Terrific’s circles, sorry “T-Spheres,” all framed by Darkseid’s Omega symbol. If that is not enough to overwhelm your senses, you have a random panel at the bottom with the Justice League Satellite.
There are variant covers by Nathan Szerdy, Derrick Chew, Jeff Spokes, and Kevin Wada.
The Nathan Szedy variant is another cover featuring the women of DC. This cover spotlights Starfire and Vixen.
The Derrick Chew variant is a stylized, cartoony realism villain cover. It features Cheetah, Joker, and Sinestro in a clock tower.
The Jeff Spokes variant is the first in a series of connecting covers in the upcoming issues of Justice League Unlimited. This cover features Superman, Captain Atom, Hawkgirl (Kendra Sanders), and the Atom (Ryan Choi).
The Kevin Wada variant is a nice cartoony-stylized character spotlight of the World Forger.
