Green Hill, South Island. Sonic’s Earth.
Darkseid Is.
So Flash and Sonic arrive.
Darkseid holds up a Chaos Emerald, admiring its power, and that’s no good. Flash tells just that to Sonic, and Sonic grins, liking the challenge. The two try to hit him as hard and fast as they can, only for Darkseid to anticipate this and aim his Omega Beams at them. The duo decide to run away, only avoiding the beams by running into each other as fast as they can.
Darkseid then boom tubes away, which Sonic finds jerky. As the two speedsters keep bantering with each other, the rest of the heroes keep searching: Superman and Knuckles have yet to find anything, Wonder Woman and Amy are asking help from Vector the Crocodile, Batman still searches with Shadow, Green Lantern still checks with Silver, and Cyborg and Tails nearly have a tracker online.
Aboard the Ragna Rock, Darkseid orders Desaad to report, but there is still no knowledge of the Chaos Emeralds whereabouts. The Emeralds are so chaotic they almost seem to be actively hiding from Father Box. Darkseid commands Desaad and his army to destroy this world until they find the emeralds, while he will apply his to the Dimensional Engine to see if it’s truly worth the effort.
But this decision helps the heroes: Cyborg and Tails detect that Apokolips forces are out, and they can cross reference what they know with the data they already have to potentially find the emeralds first. The two inform the league they’re gonna teleport them to the emerald they are nearest to. Batman asks what’s their contingency, and Superman says that they will get the other emeralds before Darkseid, then retrieve the one he stole. But they do have a backup plan: an emergency boom tube prepped to return to the watchtower if things go sideways. Green Lantern points out they can’t evacuate the entire planet like that, and Superman says they will do all they can, and that they should trust their new allies.
And so, battles commence across the planet, specifically between Batman, Shadow and Steppenwolf. Thanks to a flashbang and Shadow’s Chaos Control, they make easy work of him, only for the entire planet to shake from the Dimensional Engine’s analysis of the blue Chaos Emerald. Darkseid realizes that with just this one he could decimate this earth, but with the rest, he could lay waste to universes.
Time is up: The heroes must confront Darkseid now. Tails has no way to get them there fast enough, but thankfully, they have unexpected help: Dr. Ivo Robotnik (a.k.a Dr. Eggman) puts aside his and Sonic’s eternal war to get them to crash through Darkseid’s ship. The heroes all crash through the place, with Flash and Sonic locating the Emerald and Darkseid first. He fires an Omega Beam at them, but Superman manages to block it. Batman shouts out the game plan (neutralize the device, keep Darkseid occupied and retrieve the emerald), and so, The Justice League and Team Sonic attack the greatest evil in any universe.
Superman punches Darkseid’s fist at the same time as the latter punches his. Green Lantern and Silver trap him with projections. Wonder Woman and Knuckles wrap him up with the Lasso of Truth, and Shadow uses his Chaos Control to freeze time and beat him up.
But Darkseid can move inside Chaos Control too (which shocks Shadow). Why? Darkseid Is.
And Darkseid tosses them all aside like toys.
While Flash attempts to disrupt the Dimensional Engine, Sonic tries to grab the emerald. Darkseid attempts to obliterate him with a beam, but Superman, Knuckles and Amy just about manage to disrupt him long enough to miss. The beam then nearly hits Flash, but Green Lantern and Silver save him.
However, all this is for naught: Darkseid’s messy entrance into this world is causing the Dimensional Engine to malfunction. Quantum meltdown is imminent. Darkseid attempts to control it, but Superman and Wonder Woman try to stop him. Finally, Batman goes for a Hail Mary: He gets Green Lantern to protect Team Sonic with a projection, and with help from Cyborg’s Boom Tube tech, sends them to the DC universe.
But it’s too late. Mr. Terrific informs them of the bad news.
Sonic’s earth, Darkseid and the Justice League…
Are gone…
To Be Continued…
Story – 5: At first, I found the story to be rushed. It felt like everything was going (fittingly) at super speed, and I was wondering what the heck was going on.
As it turns out, this was on purpose, and I applaud the story for going into such a fun and different direction. Instead of your usual slow buildup to a final fight with Darkseid, the final fight is in this issue, and the heroes lose. The Justice League (for now) are gone, as is Sonic’s earth and Darkseid, 3 major losses. Team Sonic itself is only alive thanks to a valiant hail mary from the league, and now they’re on the DC earth, probably replacing the original heroes like we saw in those early looks at the book. This is a fascinating direction to what has already been a fun crossover event. Looking forward to the next one for sure!
Art – 4: As good as last time, though some facial expression are still way too off. Love the art on Darkseid at all times though.
Cover Art – 4: Feels like it’s out of a fever dream, or a 90’s commercial, but it’s real, and I love it.
Variant Cover Art – 3: Fun attempt at copying an old Sonic style game cover, not too shabby.
