Me am Bizarro, me am not review this… Okay, okay, let’s not fool around. Ahem.
Robin is trapped on Bizarro world, after a dimensional vortex popped up in the Fortress of Solitude and sucked him, Superman and Batman into the backwards planet populated by backwards versions of Superman and his friends. Their intentions seem hostile so far, and the three just try to survive after locating the boy wonder being chased by multiple Bizarro Supermans.
As it turns out, the situation is worse than they expected: a disease has spread around Bizarro world thanks to a ray, one that has made some realize they’re trapped in a backwards world. The unconverted Bizarros hate perfection AND do the opposite of a logical thing, so naturally they want to get infected. Superman figures out that if he’d lock up the ray in the fortress, then whoever’s behind this would do the opposite, and so he, Batman and Robin find it fully out in the open. Going for a hail mary, the world’s finest manage to turn a giant floating shard of green Kryptonite into blue Kryptonite (the kind Bizarro is weak to), and decide that their next move is to locate Bizarro Number One (the original). He’s not in his Fortress of Multitudes, which leaves one area: The Bizarro Bat Cave, where Bizarro Number One and Batzarro await them…
To Be Continued…
Story – 3: I will admit, I was quite excited when I heard about this story, and I was kinda disappointed by this start. It’s not bad, don’t get me wrong, still gets a 3 for some clever superhero planning and fun bizarro backwards moments, but it’s really nothing that special? I remember the Bizarro World arc by Geoff Johns and Richard Donner, and it’s hard to top that.
Obviously this could still improve, but there really wasn’t much here to digest. It starts in medies res and it kinda never really feels like it starts properly? I already feel like we’re halfway through.
I don’t know, I wasn’t feeling this one like I hoped, but maybe that changes now that Bizarro Number One and Batzarro are here.
Art – 4: What I AM impressed by is Gutierrez’s work here! Bizarro has always been a goofy character no matter how scary he can potentially be, but this story really leans into the macabre, keeping the goofiness but making the Bizarro’s feel genuinely scary! It’s hard to blame Robin for being scared at first.
Cover Art – 5: A delightfully Silver Age esque cover, what a treat!
Variant Cover Art – 3: Very nice New Frontier esque art!
Variant Cover Art – 3: A little all over the place but the effort is appreciated!
Variant Cover Art – 2: Movie tie-in covers are usually pretty weak and so is this. Looks more like a Mad Magazine parody.
