This issue picks up with no Rowan, Ronan, or Lanternholm to be seen. Superman (or as he is known on Warworld, Bahle’na Gahl, the Unblooded Sword), is floating unconscious in a field of Lanterholm debris weakened from the Sun-Eater’s Black Sun Radiation attack. But he is not alone after all, as the defenseless Unblooded Sword is at the mercy of a transformed Sun-Eater thanks to the Darkstar Ring.

Lucky for Superman he is saved by the people of the Warworld Engines who are also hunting the Sun Eater. Recognizing his House of El sigil the leader Khan-El takes Kal-El back with him to the Warworld Engines.

Meanwhile, Kryl-Ux, already empowered by one God-Aspect looks to join with a second. He seems unconcerned by the uncertain effect that the God-Aspect may have on a mortal being. For Kryl-Ux the opportunity to bring his children back to life is worth the risk.

On Warworld Engines we find that it is home to Phaelosian descendants. They are descendants of the Phaelosian survivors of War-World who in time married into the House of El. Only now they are so far removed from those origins they are not even sure Superman ever really existed.

Alura-El and Khan-El are the leaders of Warworld Engines. Long time warriors the leaders of the two Phaelosian factions united in marriage, while keeping their independent equal leadership status. Khan-El has not only found Superman, for already on the planet is the Starchild Otho-Ra. The story ends with Otho-Ra being given the chance to save Superman from the effects of the Sun-Eater’s Black Fire.

4Story – 4: While short on action this installment is good. This story is plot heavy, as the book is repositioning for a new direction. Not only is the issue focused on developing backstory, there are two essays from the “Book of El” that give us even more backstory. The first backstory is about “The Belt”, a star cluster that provides a natural defence to Warworld Engines. The second backstory is the history of the Phaelosian’s who call the Warwold Engines home.

4Art – 4: The artist Scott Godlewski, has been on the book since the beginning, but his art in this issue is almost unrecognizable. This is hands down the best art of the series so far.

3Cover Art – 3: Not only is the interior art the best of the series this cover is also hands down the best so far. The cover is by interior artist Scott Godlewski and Matt Herms. It depicts Superman flying with the denizens of the Warworld Engines.

There are variant covers by Will Conrad, Lucio Parrillo, and Megan Huang.

The Will Conrad cover was not available at the time of this review.

The Lucio Parrillo variant is another of his hyper-realistic covers with an angry red-eyed Superman and a random establishing background.

The Megan Huang variant is a very uninspiring cover design of Superman “standing” on an electrical tower in the middle of Smallville. Uninspiring because Superman is so small, and “standing” because somehow Superman is not falling.
