“Warworld Rising” – Part Three

Writer: Phillip Kennedy Johnson
Penciller: Daniel Sampere
Inker: Daniel Sampere
Cover: Mikel Janin
Variant Cover: Julian Totino Tedesco

Phaelosians are a colony of shunned fringe scientist Kryptonians who left Krypton thousands of years ago. They could very well have been taken to Warworld. Some of these refugees, including a woman named Thao-La are in Superman’s Fortress with his S-shield burned into their skin as they wonder where Kal-El was and why he didn’t rescue them. That is a question the Last Son of Krypton often asks when he cannot save someone.

As his guest is left with Lois, Superman goes to seek the Justice League’s aid. He must help Aquaman fight gigantic creatures in the process. Upon entering one’s mouth, the Man of Steel discovers an illusion telling of someone awaiting him. The alien fragment currently in Atlantis is the cause of it and the monsters’ mutation. Steve Trevor wants the piece for the United States government. Yet, that would be considered an act of war by Atlantis. Superman has had no success in convincing either party that neither of them can contain the object’s power.

5Story – 5: I’m not certain what I was originally expecting from Philip Kennedy Johnson. However, I am thoroughly impressed with what he’s done with Superman so far. He’s crafted a complex, yet fast paced and fun story worthy of the best of his predecessors. I want to re-read this one when the entire serial cincludes.

5Art – 5: The art in this story continues to be impressive. Daniel Sampere will hopefully be with this title for a long time to come.

“The Passenger” – Part Four

Writers: Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad
Penciller: Michael Avon Oeming
Inker: Michael Avon Oeming

Midnighter tries to send a message to his future self on Warworld as Trojan Solutions comes one step closer to success, Meanwhile, Mister Miracle is planning his escape. He just needs to time it correctly.

5Story – 5: As we near the release of Superman and The Authority, this story continues to be a fun and exciting one. I really wasn’t expecting to like this serial as much as I do as I rarely read The Authority books. I want to remedy that soon, and I can’t wait to see how chapter five turns out.

5Art – 5: Cloonan, Conrad and Oeming should work more together. They are right up there with Roy Thomas and John Buscema as one of the best creative teams out there. Oeming adds something magical to the story with his art.

5Cover Art – 5: Superman and Aquaman look like they should be in an interconnected image with the rest of the Justice League, which is cool. Janin really captured them perfectly.

5Variant Cover Art – 5: Why the heck aren’t there more images of Superman by Julian Totino Tedesco? He blends the classic with the modern to give the character the timeless appeal he deserves.
