Metropolis Celebrates 54th Anniversary of “Home of Superman” Recognition

Home of Superman - Metropolis, Illinois

The city of Metropolis, Illinois is preparing for a super celebration as it marks the 54th anniversary of its official recognition as the “Home of Superman.”

On January 21st at 10:00am, residents and visitors will gather at the town’s iconic Superman Statue to witness Mayor Gregg Jeffords read the historic proclamation that officially designated Metropolis as Superman’s hometown.

A Legacy That Brought a Museum to Illinois

The significance of this designation extends far beyond city limits. For the Hambrick family, the owners of the Super Museum, the proclamation was life-changing – literally bringing them halfway across the country.

“This legacy is why our family moved here from Southern California in 1993 to open the Super Museum,” said Morgan Siebert, daughter of Jim Hambrick, the museum’s creator who passed away in 2024. “We’ve been proud members of this community since before the big statue was even standing.”

The family’s commitment to Metropolis and its Superman heritage has now spanned more than three decades, making them fixtures in the community they chose to call home.

Special Perks for Recognition Day

The Metropolis Chamber of Commerce is helping make the anniversary celebration memorable with several special offers:

– FREE Museum Admission: The Super Museum will offer complimentary admission to all Metropolis residents

Building an Annual Tradition

Organizers hope this celebration will mark the beginning of a beloved annual tradition for the community.

“Let’s show up in force, show our local pride, and make this the start of a legendary annual tradition,” event organizers encouraged.

The celebration represents both a look back at Metropolis’s unique heritage and a commitment to honoring that legacy for years to come.
