Discussing Season 4 of “Supergirl” on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, director Kevin Smith revealed that the show’s producers were looking for a dark take on Lex Luthor, even though they were looking to cast Jon Cryer in the role.
“I knew that a long time ago,” he revealed. “When I was working on my episode, they were talking about who would play Lex Luthor and his name as at the top of the list at that point and I know what they’re doing with the character. Like, it’s not humorous. It’s a dark turn.”
Best known to Superman fans as Lex Luthor’s nephew Lenny in the movie “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace”, Jon Cryer will make an appearance in episode 15 of Season 4.
“We are enormous fans of Jon Cryer, and he was instantly our dream actor to play the iconic role of Lex Luthor. Jon is a super-talent, and the fact that he played Lenny Luthor in Superman IV brings an added layer of legacy to his casting. We’re beyond thrilled to welcome Jon to the Supergirl family,” Executive Producers Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner said in a statement.
Great to see this. Very happy they aren’t going comedic.
I’m glad to hear that they will have a serious version of Lex. I only have two questions. 1. Is Kevin Smith directing the episode? And 2. Will Lex have a beard?
OK, Kevin Smith, some fears have been eased as to the tone of The Greatest Criminal Mind of our time. But if Cryer overplays the role, it can turn into laughs…as is laughing AT not with.
I expect that if there’s any humor it will either be like Hackman where he’s sarcastic and arrogant yet also cold blooded or maybe like STAS where there are bits of humor at his expense. Like in the pilot when Luthor tries to meticulously persuade Superman to join him and Superman just keeps glaring at him to the point where Luthor gets frustrated and throws a trophy at him.
And maybe…just maybe…he’ll be having a crush on Supergirl and woos her with an Australian accent.
Hey! I could have auditioned for that role!
A wee bit late, head honcho 😀
