ASA Entertainment announced yesterday that the World Surf League (WSL) 6-Star Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro will take place for the ninth consecutive year at the Oceanside Pier in Oceanside, Calif. from July 22-24, 2016. The nationally televised event is the largest female surf contest in the world, with 112 of the planet’s top pros expected to compete. Admission to the event is free.
The Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro will serve as the lone women’s WSL qualifying event scheduled in the U.S. for the 2016 season and plays a critical role for surfers looking to solidify their position on the 2017 WSL Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT).
“With the Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro currently representing the only women’s qualifying event in the U.S., this contest is extremely important in the girls’ qualification process for next year’s WCT,” said Jessi Miley-Dyer, WSL Women’s Tour Manager. “This event is an amazing combination of the best surfers on the planet with many of the new faces just beginning their pro journey. That’s just one of the things that makes the event completely unique with the sport of competitive surfing.”
Some of the world-class surfers registered to compete include current World Champion Carissa Moore (Oahu, HI), current #1 ranked surfer Courtney Conlogue (Santa Ana, CA), Alana Blanchard (Kauai, HI), Malia Manuel (Kauai, HI), Coco Ho (Oahu, HI), Laura Enever (Sydney, Australia), Alessa Quizon (Honolulu, HI), Bianca Buitendag (Victoria Bay, South Africa), Nikki Van Dijk (Victoria, Australia), Pauline Ado (Bayonne, France), Sage Erickson (Malibu, CA), and 2015 Supergirl Pro Champion, Tatiana Weston-Webb (Kauai, HI).
“I can’t begin to explain how excited all of the girls are about this event,” said Malia Manuel, the 7th ranked surfer in the world and the 2013 Supergirl Pro champion. “It’s so amazing to have a contest like this in the US that focuses entirely on women’s surfing. I’ve been to the event every year, and it gets bigger and better each time.”
In addition to the best surfing talent in the world, the Supergirl Pro features an action-packed Festival Village with nine musical artists performing live on the Supergirl Music Stage, art, yoga, fitness, dance, seminars, autographs from the pros, hair styling by Paul Mitchell, a skateboarding competition, a food truck experience and many other activities.
Two of the headline artists performing in the Supergirl Concert Series include multi-platinum singer/song-writers Cody Simpson and Daya, who between them have eight songs that have entered the Billboard Top 200.
New to the event in 2016 will be a Celebrity Surf Invitational to raise money and awareness for event charities, an all-female DJ Competition and a Female Leadership Summit panel discussion featuring successful women in entertainment, sports, media, education and business. The complete entertainment and music lineup slated for the Festival Village will be announced at a later date.
“We are really pleased about the expansion of the Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro in 2016, both in and out of the water,” said Rick Bratman, CEO of ASA Entertainment, the event’s management company and one of the leading producers of action sports event and television programming in the US. “Each year we look to add elements that will not only be additive to the entire event experience, but will also further the event’s mission of providing opportunities for young women. It is incredibly gratifying to have watched the event become the largest female surf contest in WSL history, and we are proud to have provided a platform for important causes such as sustainability, bullying prevention, breast cancer awareness and female empowerment.”
“Paul Mitchell is thrilled to be involved with such an amazing group of women, and we are proud to have the largest field of talent in women’s surfing competing at our event,” said Julie Solwold, Vice President of Global Sports and Events at John Paul Mitchell Systems. “These girls have style, grace, beauty and athleticism that align perfectly with our brand, and we are excited to help them gain much-deserved exposure for their sport.”
“Warner Bros Consumer Products is proud to help celebrate women’s empowerment and shine a spotlight on strong female role models for the 10th consecutive year of the Supergirl series,” said Pam Lifford, President, Warner Bros Consumer Products. “The Supergirl S-Shield represents bravery and strength, making it a symbol perfectly suited for the surf Super Heroes competing at this inspiring event.”
The event will run on Friday, July 22 and Saturday, July 23, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday, July 24, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
