Jon Cryer Joins “Supergirl” as Lex Luthor

The CW has announced that Jon Cryer has been cast as Lex Luthor for the “Supergirl” TV series.

Best known to Superman fans as Lex Luthor’s nephew Lenny in the movie “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace”, Jon Cryer will make an appearance in episode 15 of Season 4.

“We are enormous fans of Jon Cryer, and he was instantly our dream actor to play the iconic role of Lex Luthor. Jon is a super-talent, and the fact that he played Lenny Luthor in Superman IV brings an added layer of legacy to his casting.  We’re beyond thrilled to welcome Jon to the Supergirl family,” Executive Producers Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner said in a statement.

Lex: Lenny!!!!!
Lenny:what???

lol. I’m going to give him a chance. I’m more used to seeing this actor in comedic roles, but who knows? He may surprise me. He may be really good at playing a evil genius.

He will certainly not be an intimidating presence so I’m guessing they’re going to make him goofy.

‘Ive always considered Jon Cryer to be the Dutch elm disease of the lex Luthor family tree of actors.’

In all seriousness this is just the strangest wink at the fans. Im not sure how Lex has gone from initimidating interpretations to Eisenberg and now Cryer. I’m pretty sure Billy Zane is still available.

I still don’t know what to yet think. All I can say for the moment that the choice is indeed interesting and it’s a typical let’s just wait and see scenario. IMO they have taken a page of the CW’s casting of the Flash by adding John Wesley Shipp as Henry/Jay to add further winks to the past.

Sorry guys, I ain’t feeling it! And to pick someone who was in the long forgotten Cannon/Golan Globus Superman IV? I mean what’s next…Nuclear Man gets cast?

Look Cryer is a comedy guy and the “geniuses” (ACK!) at CW must be going for the Batman V Superman crazy guy Lex Luthor.

That said, he did star on Two and a Half Men which is now being rerun to death on WPIX channel 11, Supergirl’s flagship NYC station.

To the people who keeps giving me the negative votes after I had just possibly given you a positive vote,uh your welcome? I’m mean I try to do something nice for you, and you keep down voting me when it’s most likely that I had given you a positive vote on Friday. I’m not asking you to give me any positive votes, I’m not. But what I have to ask is this. If a person is doing something nice for you, then why be mean to them? Why give me a negative number if I haven’t said or done anything… Read more »

I only wonder if did change my profile name and picture, would my previous comments change to the new one? Thank you for your advice. I do appreciate it Kal-Ed.

Jon Cryer is 53 years old. Brenda Strong, who plays his mom, is 58, lol.

In hindsight, they probably should to have made Lena be Lex’s daughter instead of sister.

This is why he probably should’ve been cast to play Brenda Strong’s character’s brother. It would be funny and go full circle for Lena and a recast Lex Luthor to refer to Jon Cryer as Uncle Lenny. A missed opportunity.

That didn’t stop the producers and Steven Spielberg from casting Sean Connery as Harrison Fords’s father in Indiana Jones 3. He was 10 years his senior.

I did not know he was 10 years older than Harrison. That’s very interesting Kal-Ed. They did cast the part Indiana’s father well though. It’s definitely my favorite Indiana Jones movie.

It certainly did create a great chemistry between the two actors despite the age difference as father and son. I like the IJ movies they are all great…but the 3Rd is the most constantly watched. Mainly because it is always shown on TV every now and then.

Connery’s chemistry with Ford allowed them to ignore the age gap but Connery having been James Bond also got him cast. The age gap between Ford and Connery is at least over a decade apart (12 years). That doesn’t excuse it but it was passable because Ford was still in his mid-40s and didn’t look it. Ditto for the real life 10 year age-gap between Sally Field and Tom Hanks playing as mother and son in Forest Gump. I’m still going to give Jon Cryer a chance as Lex but my expectations aren’t too high.

I could see him playing it goofy, but I hope they DO go dramatic with him. There is a history of comedians doing a good job in dramatic roles. Robin Williams in ONE HOUR PHOTO is creepy as all hell…

It will be really hard to top Rosenbaum’s performance. I don’t think that there will be an actor that can play the part better than Michael. I am looking forward to seeing this new version though.

Hugh Jackman does have the intensity to play the part. He could play a scary Lex.
I also think that actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan who plays Negan on the walking dead, would be an excellent pick for Lex. He can be scary intense, like the way Lex can be.

Hugh Jackman would be excellent in the role. He has a certain intensity that he could bring to the part. Jeffrey Dean Morgan would also be a good pick as well. He plays Negan on the Walking Dead. He could play a scary intimidating Lex.

Well, that’s…a choice.

Maybe he’s taking it as an opportunity to do something completely different from what he’s usually known for? ..or as others have said they’re gonna play him goofy which I really hope they wouldn’t. At the very least give him that balance that Hackman’s Lex had where he had wit and sarcasm but was also cold blooded.

You bring up a good point MattComics. I seem to remember an episode of two and a half men where his character Alan, had a dark side. I thought he did quite well playing mean for an episode. I’m curious on what his interpretation on Lex will be. I’m going to wait and see what he does with the character before I decide on his casting.

Hackman’s Lex did have a darker side that was shown in the extended edition of Superman the movie. Maybe he will play the role in a similar fashion.

With all due respect, I will not be doing that. You don’t need me, or anyone else (in my opinion), to up vote you. You are giving this person (or persons) power over you: the power to affect you negatively. DO NOT GIVE IN! KEEP BEING YOUR TRUE AUTHENTIC SELF! Stand in defiance of this person/persons and just keep doing what you believe is right. Ignore the individual(s). Now, I understand what I have said may appear easier said than done, but once you rise up and own your power, it gets easier and easier to ignore people like this.… Read more »

Thank you for your advice SuperFunTime. I do appreciate your honesty in this matter. I guess I’ll just keep ignoring this person. I admit that ignoring this person won’t be easy. But maybe with some time he/she will move on. You know I met actor Jason David Frank aka Tommy the Green Power Ranger. He’s a great guy. I met him over two years ago at NJ’s comic fest in Morristown. I also met Dean Cain a year later. They say “never meet your heroes because they will always disappoint”. That saying is wrong. I say if you get the… Read more »

I have met plenty of people I have watched on tv and/or movies from various shows like Arrow, Buffy, Power Rangers, Smallville, Stargate, Star Trek, WWE, X-Files, etc. Meeting Trish Stratus and Lita from WWE was absolutely amazing, as they were 2 of my favourites. Got to talk with them about life, working out and yoga (particularly with Trish Stratus). 🙂 From Smallville, I met Laura Vandervoort. I loved her energy. Since we both have karate backgrounds, we took photos together in fighting poses. We also took photos hugging it out. She was fun to be with and easy to… Read more »

When I met Dean Cain and Jason David Frank, I think I was a little like Winn from Supergirl from when he met Superman for the first time in season 2. These are two people who I have always looked up to, and meeting both of these actors were special moments for me. Of course I was respectful to them as well. They both really know how to respond to fans.

Eventually, you will reach a point where you won’t even have to morph to deal with these down votes. The down votes, like the Putties, may still come, but you will be able to easily brush them aside without the need to morph, like the Power Rangers got used to dealing with the Putties without necessarily needing to morph. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGX-q47XbQw 1) I am NOT suggesting you go beat up anyone. I am saying you need to mentally and emotionally build yourself up. 2) I can’t believe I just used Power Rangers to illustrate what I am saying. LOL! 🙂 3)… Read more »

I can see your point. I sort of think of it as how it is on the show My Hero Academia. I relate to the character Izuku Midoriya aka Deku and how he looks up to his favorite Superhero All might. Just like Deku, I too have a favorite superhero. Superman. On Deku’s quest to be like his favorite hero, he’s often picked on by others. And at times he does feel down about that. But he keeps trying his best, until he proves that he too can be a hero. Thank you for reminding me of that. I shouldn’t think… Read more »

I remember hearing about that issue when it first came out. At the time I was so worried that Superman would no longer have any more stories. Then came the reign of the Supermen story arch. And there was mystery on who was the real Superman. At the time I thought it might have been the eradicator or cyborg superman because they both looked like him in their own way. I’m so glad I was wrong, and that by the end of the return of Superman story arch, the true Superman returned.
