Jimmy Olsen’s DC Series Confirmed as Crime Mystery Comedy

DC Studios’ upcoming Jimmy Olsen spin-off series for HBO Max has been confirmed as a crime mystery comedy, with co-showrunner Dan Perrault revealing new details about the project at SXSW this week.

Perrault, speaking to TheDirect.com while attending the festival for his new film “Love Language”, confirmed his involvement alongside co-showrunner Tony Yacenda. The duo are best known for creating “American Vandal”, the acclaimed mockumentary true crime parody that earned an Emmy nomination — making them a natural fit for what is shaping up to be a genre-bending superhero series.

“It’s comfortable territory for Tony Yacenda and I,” Perrault said of the show’s direction. “We’ve worked in this crime mystery comedy for a very long time. There’s definitely tools from that toolkit that we can apply here that I don’t think has been seen in the superhero genre thus far.”

The series stars Skyler Gisondo, who made a breakout debut as Jimmy Olsen in 2025’s “Superman”. Gisondo’s awkwardly charming portrayal of the Daily Planet photographer quickly became a fan favorite, and his solo show is reported to be framed as a true-crime docuseries hosted by Olsen himself. The Flash villain Gorilla Grodd is reportedly set to serve as the first season’s main antagonist.

As for the title, that remains up in the air. Early reports had dubbed it “DC Crime”, a name since debunked by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn. Perrault says the team is still workshopping options. “We were tossing around some names last week,” he said, adding with a laugh that it is at least confirmed not to be called “Untitled Jimmy Olsen Show.”

The series is still in the writing stage, so a release date has not been set. In the meantime, Gisondo may well reprise the role in Superman’s planned sequel, “Man of Tomorrow”, currently scheduled for July 2027.
