James Gunn’s “Superman” Earns Oscar Shortlist Recognition in Technical Categories

James Gunn’s “Superman” has landed on two key Oscar shortlists.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that “Superman” made the cut in both the Sound and Visual Effects categories for the 98th Academy Awards. The DC reboot joins heavyweight contenders including “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” “Wicked: For Good,” and “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” on both shortlists.

The shortlist placements recognize the technical craftsmanship behind bringing the Man of Steel to life in Gunn’s film, which stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent and launched the new DC Universe.

From these 10-film shortlists, Academy branch members will narrow the field to five nominees in each category. Final nominations will be announced January 22, with the 98th Oscars ceremony scheduled for March 15, hosted by Conan O’Brien.
