James Gunn’s Cryptic Update on “Superman” Sequel

DC Studios co-CEO accidentally sparks sequel speculation before setting the record straight

James Gunn sent Superman fans into a frenzy today with what appeared to be confirmation of a direct sequel to his recently released “Superman” film. However, the director quickly clarified that his comments were taken out of context.

The confusion began when Gunn posted on Threads about his current projects, telling a fan he was busy with “Peacemaker press!! And sequel writing!!!” When pressed by another fan asking when he would tease the sequel, Gunn enthusiastically replied, “I JUST DID!”

Fans naturally assumed Gunn was referring to a traditional “Superman” sequel, which seemed particularly noteworthy since Gunn had previously been cryptic about follow-up plans, once responding to “Superman 2” questions with “Define Superman 2.”

However, when a confused fan sought clarification about whether this was the same project Gunn had mentioned before—one where Superman would have “a major role” but wouldn’t be exactly a sequel—the director quickly course-corrected.

“Yes, yes, sorry. This is the same movie. Superman has a major role. It’s not ‘Superman 2,'” Gunn explained.

So while Superman fans won’t be getting a straightforward sequel just yet, they can look forward to seeing David Corenswet’s Man of Steel in a significant role in whatever DC project Gunn is currently developing. The exact nature of this mysterious film remains under wraps, but Gunn’s enthusiasm suggests it will be worth the wait.

It’s understandable that he’d be cryptic and not talk about it. Other than the fact he obviously is under a contract or NDA of somesorts, he wants people to focus on Peacemaker Season 2. He clearly is passionate about it and wants folks to see it.
