James Gunn Says Superman is a “Huge Priority”

Superman

It’s been a crazy weekend of revelations and speculation regarding the future of DC movies, with plenty of stories and reactions stemming from the recent article by The Hollywood Reporter that plans for Henry Cavill’s return as Superman are still in doubt.

The Hollywood Reporter also claims that before James Gunn and Peter Safran came on board, “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight had penned a treatment for a Superman film starring Henry Cavill, but the script didn’t thrill Warner Bros. executives, and development promptly ended.

It has also been reported that former head of DC Films Walter Hamada had plans to eventually bring back Henry Cavill in a “Crisis on Infinite Earths” adaptation, but that Dwayne Johnson’s insistance that he cameo at the end of “Black Adam” thwarted those plans. The word is that the upcoming “The Flash” movie would have laid the groundwork for the “Crisis” idea, with multiple timelines and cameos.

Now, on the back of his Twitter notice about today being the 44th anniversary of the release of “Superman: The Movie,” DC Studio’s Co-CEO James Gunn has also indicated that Superman is very much a priority at Warner Bros.

“Superman premiered 44 years ago today,” Gunn tweeted.

When asked whether Superman would be coming back to the big screen, Gunn responded with, “Yes of course. Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.”

The fact that he mentioned Superman but not Henry Cavill prompted another fan to ask Gunn if he could deny rumors that he does not like Henry Cavill. Gunn wrote, “Sure: false.”

So, with Superman a huge priority for Warner Bros., and Henry Cavill recently announcing he’s back as Superman, and saying he was excited to work with James Gunn, all we can do is sit back and wait for an official announcement one way or the other.

I’m glad hamada and his regime didn’t get their way. They just wanted to sideline him. No thanks. I don’t necessarily love the way he was re-introduced, but I do trust James Gunn and if he says superman is a priority, then I believe him more than I would others in his position. I’m also kind of glad patty Jenkins walked… loved the original WW but 84 was awful. It’s pure hubris on her end to walk away because she refused notes and didn’t like that she was critiqued. You would think that after 84, she would be humbled, but… Read more »

I am cautious about this news. When he says Superman is a “huge priority” does he just mean for the movies or for all media in general? And I’m talking about Tyler Hoechlin Superman as well as Henry Cavill’s. There’s also been rumors of the kingdom come story possibly being adapted for a movie. Could he be thinking about bringing back Brandon Routh’s Superman for that story? I for one cannot see any other actor playing Superman for that story. Nor do I want any other actor to play Superman for that one particular story. For now, whether or not… Read more »

James Gunn has already addressed some of this by saying: Peter & I chose to helm DC Studios knowing we were coming into a fractious environment, both in the stories being told & in the audience itself & there would be an unavoidable transitional period as we moved into telling a cohesive story across film, TV, animation, and gaming. But, in the end, the drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities & the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far & to help rectify what has not. We know we are not… Read more »

I don’t understand why you keep criticizing anything I have to say about Superman projects. I’m only pointing out the obvious. We don’t know anything yet. We don’t know what movies are coming out and who will star in them. We don’t know how this will affect TV shows as of yet. And I’m also pointing out The obvious that there’s been no confirmation as of yet if Cavill is coming back or not. He may come back or he may not. James Gunn may decide to have more than one actor playing Superman in multiple different Superman projects for… Read more »

I am all about Superman projects and the actual “character” and it’s definition to be that character in a cohesive story that spans across Film, TV, Animation, and Gaming. (Star Wars formula minus the books and comics) What I mean is the representation of what “Superman” actually stands for in ANY universe. Let me make this clear. Again. I am a fan of ALL Superman’s. I would rank them all on a list. The point is that they are even on a list. You’re fav, Brandon Routh, is in my top 3. Was I sad there was no sequel to… Read more »

And if you read this part you might take notice(I still think this is the plan. Just a different way of being told)

I don’t know what’s gonna be in the flash film. Henry may be in it as well as Brandon, or they may not be. We don’t know yet.

How much plot can they change in a movie that was supposed to come out this year?
I think the movie will still set up a Crisis event. I do not believe Dwayne Johnson thwarted the plans of this by bringing in Cavill for Black Adam.
I think they just changed what type of multiverse event it would be and make.
Maybe a “Dark Crisis On Infinite Earths” styled movie. Who knows.
