Is Tom Welling Considered a Superman Actor? – Poll Results

In the latest Superman Homepage Member Poll we asked you the following question:

Do you consider Tom Welling a Superman actor?

This one was hotly debated on our Facebook page, but the YES vote was a clear winner with nearly 70% of the votes. Even though Tom’s Clark Kent only became Superman in the final episode of the series on “Smallville” (and even though Tom only wore a Superman shirt under his Clark Kent clothing for the shirt rip, with everything else purely CGI), fans still consider him worthy of being listed as a Superman actor.

Here’s the complete voting breakdown:

Sure, why not?!?! I just wish he’d be a little cooler with actually being Superman. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again; after ten years and 218 episodes, the least he could do was actually wear a real cape for a full episode. For a while, it seemed like he was mellowing at least a little; in his first appearance on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, he talked about being called “Superman” vs “Clark Kent”. He’s mentioned at least a willingness to return for a Smallville-based animated series, which I would think would be set after the finale. And I… Read more »

I was one of the unsure undecided voters for this one. I mean, I could see arguments for both sides. On the one hand Tom’s version of Clark did everything that fits the character of Superman. He used his powers to stop villains and save people. He had two identity’s Clark/the red blue blur or just the blur, he wore glasses every once in a while, and he even had two proto-Superman suits with the S insignia for season 9 and 10 of Smallville. So he could be called Superman in that sense. On the other hand, he didn’t embrace his… Read more »

He’s a Superman actor who appears to be not fond of the character and seems to hate the idea of being one. While at the end of the day he doesn’t actually owe it to anyone to be a fan or really anything other than his performance, I just think that if you really feel that being Superman or wearing that suit is just such a anathema for you then DON’T sign on to play Clark Kent. Clark Kent is Superman (or in the shows case will become Superman ***eventually***). Or at the very least recognize why that for people… Read more »

I voted no. Why would I consider an actor who never wanted to play or be Superman Superman. Hell the man never even wore the suit he had them CGI the suit on him and the shield at the end because he didn’t want to be Superman. Even when they had him wear the shield he did everything in his power to hide it from having it always ripped in the black shirt to having his jacket always unzipped. So no I don’t consider him Superman at all. Hell look at the crisis episode he was in that was proof… Read more »

I would say he was more so Superman in training !! After about the 5 year mark when all the cast members were older and out side of the school years, they were able to bring in Superman related story lines. They went through about every Superman story line they could including STM and S2. But we didn’t see Superman doing battle, we saw Clark Kent. I considered what we got to be nothing more than a token for our time as loyal fans. That is why, for me anyway, he was NOT a Superman actor. I thought what the… Read more »

I believe Tom Welling is a Superman actor though most of the time he was called “The Blur”. Being Superman is not really about the suit. The suit is Kal El representing his heritage as a Kryptonian as well as representing the symbol of the House of El which looks like an ‘S’ to us. Superman is about the cliche, fighting for “Truth, justice and the American Way.”. The show Smallville wasn’t about Superman though, which is why they called it Smallville. It was about Clark growing up discovering he had abilities and was in fact not a human after… Read more »

“Superman doesn’t need a cape and suit with big ‘S’ to show his heroic nature” ..and the problem with that is that NO ONE who was requesting to see Tom in the suit ever thought otherwise. This was just a lot of people’s bog standard go-to for shutting them down whenever the subject was brought up.  The costume has been part of the character since Action Comics no.1, is easily one of the most identifying things about him and something people have enjoyed for over 80 years. Superman wears a suit. It’s not the entirety of the character but it… Read more »

All great points. Thank the stars the shows not being made right now. The social and political correctness that appears not to be a choice but an obligation on the CW shows is as over the top as it could possibly get. That’s what the new Superman/Lois series will revolve around. It’ll water the character down even further. They didn’t do him any favors in ridiculous Crisis as well, in both portrails of Clark Kent and Superman. We never saw TW in the suit anyways. A blurry image through ice, a shot of the cape and a shirt rip were… Read more »
