Is Rocksteady Studios Making a New Superman Video Game?

Rumors have persisted for some time now that game developer Rocksteady Studios has been working on a Superman video game.

Today a new listing from Rocksteady Studios appeared on Game System Requirements with the title of “Superman: World’s Finest”. Speculation is high that the developer of the hugely popular “Batman: Arkham” series will finally make an announcement “The Game Awards” on December 6, where a number of news titles are expected to be revealed.

We’ll keep you posted on any news that drops.

I surely hope so. And it better be so good playing a non evil Superman game and put the others to shame. The fight and flight system as well as the mission gameplay is the most I’m looking forward to.

A Superman video game? Make it so. I prefer a game where he is the lead hero. I don’t mind there being a multiplayer option and levels where other heroes are playable as well just as long as Superman is the main playable hero. Also different suits for him to wear would be great. A Clark Kent suit and other historical Superman outfits as well. And please no evil Superman this time. The evil Superman angle has been played out long enough. And an open world game play like they did in the Batman Arkham games, where Superman can explore… Read more »

And fly into space at superspeed and back again. Earth would look so cool from above using Supe’s POV. Whenever he is hovering in space his eyes widen with wonder and hopes for a better tomorrow and then suddenly…super hearing kicks in and trouble is on the horizon.

Yeah the title has me a little concerned. At least in the sense that do they think Superman can’t sell on his own? He has to have Batman around to make WB comfortable they’ll get a return on investment?

I certainly hope so but not getting my hopes too high. By the way, the title, “Superman: World’s finest” make me think of both Superman and Batman. If Batman and even Robin are playable, it’s fine with me as long as Superman is the main character. As for challenges in a Superman game, It would be great if they make a “hope” system. The challenges would focus more on Superman’s successes and failures rather than deaths. For example, while fighting a super-villain, rather than dying, he could be knocked out by a super-villain and s/he gets away; thus failing the… Read more »

Kinda wish Insomniac was doing it. Their Spidey game grasped the character so well I couldn’t help but imagine what they would do with Superman.

It’s going to take more than a wiki post to convince me.
In the past Rocksteady has stated that Superman isn’t right for video games and that what they are working on now was the team’s “dream project.”
None of this ads up to one conclusion or the other, but I don’t think getting hopes up for what is almost always proven to be fake is good.

“Superman isn’t right for video games”

They really said that? How the hell is he any less right for video games than any other superhero?

I’m not going to get my hopes up… I’m not going to get my hopes up… I’m not going to get my hopes up… I’ve been reading about this game supposedly being in development for a couple years now and this is probably one of the most solid leads I’ve seen so far. The Arkham games completely changed gaming, in my opinion, and are pretty damn solid as far as I am concerned. The execution of the gameplay along with the storytelling go so well together that it gives me hopes for a Superman game that changes the landscape of… Read more »

from Rocksteady Games director and co-founder Sefton Hill yesterday on Twitter:

“Looking forward to The Game Awards this year! We’re still hard at work in our development bunker so don’t expect an announcement from Rocksteady Games. When it’s ready to show, you’ll be the first to know. Spoiler: it’s not Superman”

so for those who were hoping (like I was), I’m sorry to break the heart.
