Is General Zod a Better Superman Villain Than Lex Luthor?

A Superman fan sparked debate online with a bold declaration: General Zod is a better and more interesting villain than Lex Luthor.

The response? Fans called this hot take “volcanic,” “scalding hot,” and “hydrochloric.” But does this controversial opinion have any merit?

WATCH: Our full breakdown of why Lex Luthor remains Superman’s ultimate nemesis…

The Case for Zod

The argument centers on Zod being both a physical AND philosophical match for Superman. While Clark grew up with an idealized vision of Krypton as a paradise, Zod embodies what it actually was—militaristic, fascist, and doomed.

He’s not just another villain. He’s Superman’s dark reflection, showing the reality behind the mythology. Some fans compared him to Scar from The Lion King—a Shakespearean figure representing the shadow of the hero’s heritage.

Superman Fans Says “Absolutely Not”

The pushback was swift and brutal. Fans identified three major problems with this take:

Brawn vs Brawn is Boring: When two equally powerful beings just punch each other, there’s no strategy. Superman should win with his mind, not just his fists.

No Real Philosophy: The choice between fascism and freedom isn’t complex. There’s no compelling moral question—it’s as blunt as Zod’s punch.

The Evil Mirror Trope: Zod is just another “villain with the hero’s powers but evil.” Superman already has characters like Bizarro and Ultraman for that. Outside rare exceptions like Reverse Flash, these villains are rarely the most interesting.

Why Lex Wins

Lex Luthor works because he’s Superman’s perfect opposite. A godlike alien who chooses humanity versus a human who craves godlike power. That’s genuine philosophical tension.

The tragedy of Lex? He could cure cancer. He could save the world. But he’s so obsessed with proving humanity doesn’t need Superman that he wastes his genius on revenge schemes and Kryptonite battle suits.

Superman can’t just eliminate Lex because he might actually do something good someday. That’s dramatically rich territory.

The Execution Problem

Even some Zod supporters had to admit: he gets maybe one great story per decade. Lex gets multiple brilliant storylines every year.

The issue isn’t that Zod can’t be interesting—it’s that writers rarely give him depth. Fans imagined better versions: What if Zod wanted to save Earth from making Krypton’s mistakes rather than just conquer it? That could be compelling.

But that’s not what we usually get.

The Verdict

The overwhelming consensus: Lex Luthor remains Superman’s greatest villain.

Could Zod be better with improved writing? Absolutely. Does he have untapped potential? Yes. But potential isn’t execution. Lex has decades of consistently brilliant stories. Zod has a handful of great appearances scattered across his history.

In the battle of brains versus brawn, Superman’s greatest villain will always be the one who challenges him to grow, not just fight harder.

As much as I like Zod, I have to admit Lex has better stories and longevity in his side. When Superman and Lex fight, we see a conflict of ideologies and philosophies that can only be rivalled by the conflict between Batman and the Joker.

Also, AI slop? Why? Why stoop to that, SH? You’re better than that.
