Welcome to the 381st edition of the Big Blue Report!
I'm not sure where it originated from, but a photo of three cast members of the "Supergirl" TV series found its way online this week showing Floriana Lima (who plays Maggie Sawyer), Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers) and Tyler Hoechlin (as Superman).
Fans of the TV series will be aware that Hoechlin, who played the role of Superman for the first two episodes of this current season, will be returning for the Season 2 finale.
Now, the photo in question has the three actors posing for a photo. Who took the photo is unknown. It's obviously someone on set, a crew member, fellow cast member... it's someone they know and are aware that the photo is being taken. Whether or not they knew it would be posted online is anyone's guess. These kinds of photos are being posted from the set in between takes all the time by cast members of all different shows. No big deal. Except one thing...
While Floriana Lima is smiling, and Chyler Leigh appears to be blowing the camera a kiss, Tyler Hoechlin, who is dressed in the Superman costume, is staring at the camera, with his middle finger sticking up. Yep, he's "flipping the bird". Dressed as Superman, he's giving us the finger.
People give the finger all the time. It's not nice, but it's fairly common. It can be funny. It can be rude. It can be taken in many different ways. The thing is, Tyler Hoechlin can flip the bird whenever he wants... BUT NOT WHEN HE'S DRESSED AS SUPERMAN!
That's the real problem here. He's portraying a character that stands for something. He's dressed in the garb of a cultural icon. There's a certain responsibility that comes with the role... ESPECIALLY when you're wearing the costume!
It's not a good look. I'm sure the people at The CW, DC Comics and Warner Bros. aren't impressed with it. Tyler might not have known that the photo would be posted online, but he'd be pretty naive not to think that it would be seen by people.
I've seen fans call the photo "classless," "rude," "disgusting," and also "funny," "hilarious," and "cute"... I think, when you come down to it, the real word for it is "irresponsible". You're portraying a character who is a role model to many people... Along with the honor of being chosen to be the one to wear that costume comes a whole bag of responsibility. You have to take that seriously.
Nobody expects Hoechlin to be a saint. In his personal life George Reeves wasn't. Neither was Christopher Reeve. I'm sure Henry Cavill isn't either. But there's one thing they all understood/understand... You have to respect the role and what it means to people.
Flipping the finger to the camera while dressed as Superman isn't respecting the character.
Tyler Hoechlin may be a great guy. He definitely plays the role well from what I've seen in the two episodes we saw him... But I have no doubt that this one photo has lost him quite a number of fans.
It's just not a good look...
