Eddie's Answers

November 2001

Yusuf Madhiya (yrumad2001@yahoo.co.uk) has a flash-back question:
Several years ago, after Superman came back to life, there was a small three-part series "Spilled Blood" with a guy called "Bloodthirst" fading out in the end of "Superman: Man of Steel #29". Did that thing end somewhere & what happened to him?

Eddie: Nope, but it sounded like this guy had all the time in the world, so he had no worries about being real slow to do anything.

Giuseppe Napoli (gius.napoli@tiscalinet.it) wants to know:
Most of the stories seem to focus on Superman. Will we see more stories that focus on Clark Kent any time soon?

Eddie: In our heads they're the same guy, so the guys have focused on the part of him that can use the powers with no worries. Clark in civies will be popping in though. MOS #120 on sale in November puts him in the spotlight.

Albert Peace (alberto_paz@ig.com.br) asks:
Any chance of seeing the villain Dominus return to menace Superman?

Eddie: No, plans currently, but the way he warps reality, it could change.

Gregory McNeill (stevenriley@excite.com) asks:
Any plans for "Action Comics" since the book is close to its 800th issue? Is there any chance of seeing Dan Jurgens working on Superman again?

Eddie: Tossing around some big ideas since we're all very aware of the fact that #800 is coming. There is, but I'd like it to be for something special... so we'll see.

Tomas Hernandez (romulusiii@yahoo.com) says:
Let me start by saying you guys rock! Now on to the question. After reading the Superman comics I have become a "super" fan of your work and I was wondering if in the future you guys would take story ideas from avid readers in order to give the Man of Steel new story lines? Also are you guys dreaming up any new villians for Supes to go up against?

Eddie: Thank you very much. Fans like you get us jazzed to do cool stuff, and we do have a bunch of new antagonists coming for the Man of Steel in the New Year. There's Byakko and Gunshin in ACTION, ADVENTURES will be doing an ancestor of a future villian and SUPERMAN will be giving a total makeover to a classic name, plus introducing Superman to a guy that actually causes the Man of Steel some doubt.

Michael Sacal (manoftheatom3@hotmail.com) recently completed his Superman post-Crisis collection and decided to read all of it and has this comment/question:
One thing about the older books, that I think is lacking from the current ones, is continuity, as well as supporting characters. The stories in those books would feed eachother, like when Gangbuster was attacked and his back broken, or when Superman killed the 3 Phantom Zone Criminals. Every arc back then would be mentioned in the books that came after, till they were replaced by new arcs. One most important thing I think is missing is supporting characters. Wolfman and Ordway introduced Gangbuster and Cat Grant for example, while the current creators haven't introduced any new characters to complement the existing ones, just using old ones. My question would be: Any chance of infusing new blood into the Superbooks as well as bringing back a sense of continuity between the titles, from arc to arc, as well as a sense of the characters growing up?

Eddie: That's the big debate as to whether the books are connected or not. After OUR WORLDS AT WAR, we wanted to separate the books a bit. This will only last until the Summer of 2002, and then some major things start happening.
The question I have for all of you is, do you want pages taken away from Superman to give to supporting cast? Let us know.
Currently, MOS is doing a great job of fleshing out John Henry and growing the staff of Steelworks. Do you want to see this in the other books? There are things planned for Ma and Pa in SUPERMAN. But let me know what you guys really wanna see.

Van Banoovong (vbanoovong@yahoo.com) asks:
On the heals of the new "Smallville" TV series, are there any plans to add a fifth ongoing Superman series that focuses on Smallville?

Eddie: If we add another Super-book to my schedule, I'll explode.
But we love that show, although for now no comic connection--unless, of course, Dominus changes all this.

Martin Alejandro Salinas (mas_el@yahoo.com) asks:
With the costume change Superman looks darker. I mean, Batman is in some aspects the opposite of Superman. Batman is dark, Superman is light. Don't you think that with the black background in Superman's shield, the Man of Steel loses some of his signifigance as a symbol of hope and light?

Eddie: It's not about Superman becoming dark, but about him mourning those lost during the war, although we never thought it would be quite as relevant as it is now... and Superman is still fighting the good fight without resorting to any Batman tactics.

I (Steve Younis) caught up with Eddie soon after the Pilot Episode of "Smallville" aired and asked him:
What do you think of "Smallville"? Do you think it will be a success? How do you think it will impact on the Superman mythos?

Eddie: It's certainly a refreshing take on the beginnings. I think they have a real great, young cast, and the idea of one of the DUKES boys as Pa Kent is inspired. I really hope it is a success, it makes my job all that much cooler, and I wanna be asked to be an extra on the show. Mike Carlin and the super-team of that time got to be on "Lois & Clark", so why not the current crew on "Smallville". The good stuff just keeps the character alive for another generation. He keeps evolving. And now more than ever we need someone like the Man of Steel.

Thanks Eddie!
