Eddie's Answers

August 2001

Frank (fiacono@verizon.net) asks:
Several years ago in "The Trial of Superman" storyline, Massacre was sentenced to death and thrown into the Sun. How is it he has reappeared once again? Did he ever die?

Eddie: He did, but why should Superman be the only alien that can come back from the dead.

Carey Lester (Rodimus75@aol.com) asks:
Where was Superman born? In 1986 in the "Man of Steel" mini-seires we were told he was born on Earth, then in the "Return to Krypton" tale he was born on Krypton, but in a letter column it is said that his current continuty remains intact i.e. the John Byrne revision. Please explain which is correct.

Eddie: He is the Last Son of Krypton, and there's still some mysteries to solve about the "Return to Krypton", so how's that for a non-answer.

Marin Salinas (mas_el@yahoo.com) and Luis Gustavo (lg@iron.com.br) both ask:
If the Krypton introduced by John Byrne in his revamp was only an illusion made by Jor-El, and the real Krypton was a Silver Age-esque one, how could Doomsday exist? I mean, in the Hunter/Prey miniseries we learned that he was created by cold geneticists from the false Krypton. Since Doomsday has been part of the OWAW storyline, I'd like to know his REAL origin. Thanks and congratulations for the "new" Superman - a character back to its roots and with fabulous stories.

Eddie: You also forgot the whole notion of the Eradicator, which also contradicts "The Return to Krypton" something the Eradicator is not too pleased about, and he's gonna take it out on Krypto in issue #119 of MAN OF STEEL on sale in October.

G. Pranata (gpranata@yahoo.com) asks:
First, I would like to commend you and your writing/art teams for rekindling my interest in Superman and his world. My question is: Are we going to see more Clark and Lois being reporters after the OWAW event? A few years ago there was a fun story in which Lois challenged Clark to get stories without using his powers. Any chance that we are going to see those type of stories again?

Eddie: Not right off the bat, but I was aware that the Daily Planet got lost during the War, so the November on sale books will be emphasizing that aspect of the Man of Steel's life.

Mark Engblom (mengblom@cnonline.net) asks:
I was wondering what the chances were for another Superman title that would be similar in theme to the "Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight" series and the "Batman: Black and White" series: a title that featured stories by top comic industry creators without necessarily tying into mainstream DC continuity. Anything like this in the planning stages?

Eddie: Hmmm, ask again later.

Tony (Vuko2000@aol.com) asks:
Are there any plans for the Kara character from the Superman/Aliens crossover to show up anytime soon?

Eddie: Nope. Not even in the rematch between Kal and those facehuggers.

Robert Jones, Jr. (KorporateThugg@aol.com) and RG (rpgreen25@aol.com) are both concerned about Steel's apparent death in OWAW:
You killed one of the few good black characters that DC has. This is very appalling as I am a lost for words. I'm sad. By the time this crossover is over, I will be dropping the Superman books, especially yours. You've disappointed me and many others. Why did you do it?

Eddie: We love Steel, and by now, if you haven't given up the books, you should have picked up what does happen to him next, which hopefully will lead to bigger things. As to why Steel, well, we don't want to not hurt him because he is black--that's reverse discrimination. In our minds he's a great character, and an amazing addition to Superman's life, which is why we devote so much time to him in MAN OF STEEL. Of course, Prof. Hamilton is not thrilled with that.

Darrell (khanx@aol.com) asks:
In "Return to Krypton", Krypton seemed to be like the Silver Age version, and Silver Age characters like Bizarro #1 and Krypto have been reintroduced. Is it possible that Kara Zor-el, the Silver Age Supergirl could show up just once? Eddie: She wasn't part of that world that Emperor Joker created with Mxy's powers, so very doubtful. Check out what's happening in the current SUPERGIRL book, with the new costume came a lot more levity.

Josh Hill (KryptoJosh@aol.com) asks:
Will we see the Star-Spangled Kid more often in costume in the pages of SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL (or one of the other titles), along with her newly acquired cosmic rod and goggles from Jack Knight, the now former Starman?

Mark Schultz answers this one himself: Well, I can only speak for MOS, but the short answer is yes. The more complete answer is yes, but chances are not often. As much as I enjoy the Kid, the pages of MOS are rapidly getting over-crowded with a growing supporting cast. I love 'em all, but for cryin' out loud, I sometimes have trouble finding space for Big Blue himself. Basically, I've tried to make the Steelworks (Steel's industrial home and HQ) a center for worthy "science-based" characters who either currently don't have their own books, or don't get page space elsewhere. So, as long as Courtney gets face time in JSA, I'll probably be restricting her appearances to the occasional cameo, and focus more time on her stepfather, STRIPE, who now has better reason (employment, and lack of page space elsewhere) to hang around the Steelworks and the pages of MOS. I do, however, reserve the right to change my mind completely if an especially cool Kid-friendly story occurs to me.

Mamoun Alkadhi (alkadhi@ihug.co.nz) asks:
The "Return of Krypton" story line was very ambiguous, so my question is this: will you or any of the other writers provide a definite conclusion to that story line, or is it up to the fans to draw their own conclusions on the final fate of Krypton?

Jeph Loeb answers this one for us: Yes. Some of this will be dealt with immediately in "Man of Steel" in October.
