Eddie's Answers

Krillan Rogers (dominusdesaaddupain@yahoo.com) asks:
Hi, Eddie. Just wondering if you can clear up some confusion regarding Superman #191 -- Did Superman max out running at Mach 3 or did he simply come to realize that he could not catch Flash at the moment he achieved this (rather low) speed? A Mach 3 running max would seem awful low for Superman, seeing as how he has kept pace with Jay Garrick, Impulse (who, I was told, stated Supey can run at 99% lightspeed... and this was before Mongul training), etc., etc. He's flown from Earth to Saturn in under four minutes (Lex 2000), which is a minimum flight speed of about 4 times lightspeed... I gotta figure he should be able to run just as fast. He's out-run lasers and other radiant energy blasts, after all.

Eddie: Yes, he was slowing down for Wally. Phew.

Max (Sonixnfire@aol.com) asks:
Hey, Eddie. I've been looking at the covers on Superman comics lately and wondering why so many of them have nothing to do with what's on the inside. It's kind of sad, because when I open up a Superman comic nowadays I honestly don't expect to have the cover match the content. Not cool. I should be able to look at a cover that captures the essence of what's inside, and I know it's not out of the question, because when you guys nail it, you nail it. It actually makes the comic more enjoyable overall. (And I know the whole "no background" theme has been running through the comics, and I gotta say, they've really taken away from the awe I used to get from staring at a Superman cover). Can you do what you can to remedy that problem? There's no doubt that it'll make the fans happier.

Eddie: I would venture to guess that's more on ACTION, where the really cool Dave Bullock covers don't always match what's inside--but the response on these covers have been very positive. Certainly McDaniel is matching what's going on inside. In certain cases, the covers are being done way before we finalize the story or some design, so things don't always match perfectly. Once in a while we'll do something more generic to get ahead.

John (Vinay1542@yahoo.com) asks:
Thanks Eddie, for answering all our questions, I really appreciate it. I have a question that I've been thinking about for quite some time. Okay, so Superman's suit is protected by an invisible aura around him, but how does the suit penetrate the aura in the first place?

Eddie: Because the comics code allows it to. Seriously his aura does expand and allows things (people?) to come within it to a certain extent.

Katana Octopus (katana_octopus@hotmail.com) asks:
Will this upcoming story of "Blood Of My Ancestors" be in continuity? And will Superman play an active role in it?

Eddie: Let me get back to you on that one.

Carey Lester (track13d@aol.com) asks:
How does "Superman:Birthright" fit into current continuty? Superman's origin was established in the Man of Steel mini-series, and was set as the definate origin at the end of Return to Krypton II, not even two years ago. From the pictures I have seen this isn't so, Superman wasn't born on Krypton, therefore Jor-el couldn't hold him, and Pa Kent designed the S shield, it didn't come from the house of El. On another topic, I understand sales are down and as you stated it happened after the books were seperated. Bring back the inter-connecting storylines. When you heard from the people that wanted this changed, it was most likely the fly-by-night fans that were only here for a certain writer or artist, not the character. As a long time fan that has to drive 154 miles round trip just to read Superman weekly, I now wait until all the books for the month are in before picking them up.

Eddie: "Birthright" is real. How it fits is that it's the most current interpretation that we are doing for new readers. This is what most people know as the origin. I have an idea of how it can fit into continuity for longtime readers, but do we need it? "Birthright" will be re-exploring events from Superman's past in the way that the LONG HALLOWEEN for Batman did. Sadly, readers don't allow for as much artistic freedom when dealing with Kal, but let me know if you all have ideas of how it all fits.
AS for fitting together, the books will remain apart. This is what everyone was asking for. Things may change next year... maybe.

Daniel (HYPERMAN@hotmail.com) asks:
Any chance that Mark Waid and Lienil Francis Yu will be invited to write one of the ongoing Super-books? I've seen a few preview pages of their BIRTHRIGHT stuff and it looks to be the greatest Superman comic of the last ten years, at least. Maybe they could take over Superman? Also, do you ever check out the Superman Homepage reviews of the Super-titles? They're usually very good and spot on. (Yeah, I'm being cheeky with two questions for the price of one, but the second one's more of a side-note thing... Thanks for regularly answering our questions, Eddie!!

Eddie: It's my pleasure to do this as I'm not a big fan of the negativity that the internet and comic fans have created, but this site isn't like that at all. I can take criticism if it's constructive and intelligent.
Mark and Lenil are busy with BIRTHRIGHT.

Ryan Mercer (TheRock2716@aol.com) asks:
Eddie, I was wondering if the emblem on Superman's chest means healer or does it just plainly mean Superman?

Eddie: For me, it stands for hope.

Mark Fairleigh (superman2k38@sc.rr.com) asks:
Mr. Berganza, in an earlier question you noted that sales seemed to have declined once the books were disconnected from one another. I for one loved the way the seperate titles were connected and miss that old S-symbol counting system. Any thoughts to going back to the old system?

Eddie: No, not the exact old system and you'll have a better idea why in September as well as a bunch of new questions. Talk then.

Thanks again Eddie!

Eddie: No, thank you all!
