Eddie's Answers

Francis Barel (francis.barel@dartmouth.edu) asks:
Hi Eddie! Thanks for all your answers! One question that I have now that we've learned that Lex and Clark were about the same age: how should we consider Jerry White? I know he's an unknown character. But his death and everything that lead to it (especially the mini-series that detailed how Alice White and Lex dated) were just truly amazing. Is it just null, now?

Eddie: Clark and Lex are not the same age, if you look at the SUPERMAN/BATMAN SECRET FILES story that Mark Waid wrote, which reintroduced Lex to Smallville, you'll see that he is much older. The SECRET FILES notes that Lex is older and put back a couple grades because no one believes he's as smart as he is. And any continuity that existed is still intact, we're just pulling layers to reveal new aspects, unless it's really convoluted then we're just trying to streamline it.

Mike Williams (mike@bsdemon.com) asks:
Will John Henry Irons will be playing a prominent role in any of the new creative teams' titles? He was the reason I purchased Man of Steel. As a young black male, I was quite sad to see such an excellent hero of color kind of left by the wayside. Seeing him again in the "Majestic" arc, was great. And on that note, are there any DCU plans for Majestic?

Eddie: I like John Henry too. He's a great character, and he will most likely re-appear in Greg Rucka's run in ADVENTURES, although currently there's nothing set. And there are plans for Majestic. As the Magic Eight Ball says, ask again later.

Dan (eraser213@aol.com) asks:
I've been reading the Superman/Batman team up by Loeb and McGuinness... The art and story line is good but what is up with all the darn ads in the comic book... Can we please ban ads from comics? I really don't want to have to go through 3-4 pages to get back to the story.

Eddie: The story stays the same length regardless, but the ads do pay the bills. Just fast forward past them.

Carey Lester (track13d@aol.com) asks:
Considering Birthright, which has been stated isn't a revamp, does the rocket and the birthing matrix still stay intact? It seems that it would be easier to explain that the first issue of Birthright was a dream sequence, and the MOS origin (birthing matrix/rocketship) was correct, than to contradict 17 years of stories. The Lex history can fit within current continuity and outside cannon, but not the change in Krypton, and his birth that actually makes him a real born Earthling/American. Hopefully you will show this to be the case, and not disrespect us, the loyal fan base of 20+ years, to appease the newbies. Thank you for taking the time to read this and hopefully not alienate another long time reader.

Eddie: We don't want to alienate anyone, but you have to admit you were a newbie once too when the John Byrne revamp happened, and there were some dissatisfied fans then too. The line is a difficult one to draw because we do want to keep Superman fresh and exciting and still keep you loyal fans happy. BIRTHRIGHT is just a reinterpetation and not meant to disregard what has come before. In fact with issue #200, we really tried to say that all of Superman's origins are true from a certain perspective. So don't be bothered so much by the past, but enjoy the steps that we are making to move forward and making the books... well... Super.

Martin Alejandro Salinas (mas_el@hotmail.com) asks:
Eddie: If Metropolis is back to normal, then how is that some buildings, like the Daily Planet and the Lexcorp tower are diferent versions now that the pre Y2K time?

Eddie: Those buildings reverted to a mixture of both because of their importance to the city. Check out the up-coming QUESTION series later this year which gets more into the spirit of the city of Metropolis.

Daniel Godnick (Dangstealth@yahoo.com) asks:
What exactly happened at the end of "Superman #200"? Is 1986 to the present still in continuity? Is "Birthright" affecting that continuity in any way? Thanks, I usually don't care as long as its a good story but I'm a little confused.

Eddie: By the end of the "Godfall" arc some of your questions should be answered, and yes BIRTHRIGHT counts a lot. It's purpose is to act as a primer to the books into this definitely new year for Superman and co.

Jason Knoche (JK1978_14@hotmail.com) asks:
In Superman: Birthright what does the S on Clarks costume stand for?

Eddie: Keep reading, issue #12 should readily answer that.

michael chatterton (chat51@tds.net) asks:
Do DC Comics have any plans to put Superman or any of their other comics into an online format (such as e-books or Acrobat)? I'd like to be able to read comics online, fully paid for of course!

Eddie: I don't doubt that something like that will happen at some time, but currently I know of no plans like this.

Con Kominos (conkom@optushome.com.au) asks:
Eddie, it is apparent that we are seeing a revamp in Superman's continuity with one that fits in with "Birthright". But it does raise some questions as to what of the backstory stays intact and what is disposed of. For instance... Krypton: Byrne and others developed quite a literary vision of Krypton; Clone Wars, Black Zero, The Eradicator, The Cleric, Kem-L. Are any of these still relevent in the revamp? Luthor: Lex is now no longer Perry's contemporary but Clark's. Therefore he did not grow up in Suicide Slum or had his parents killed? Did Lex lose his arm while wearing a Kryptonite ring? Did he clone his body and return as his "Australian raised son"? Did he marry the Contessa and have Lena with her?

Eddie: As I said before, the stories you like are still intact, after all Eradicator is still around. And for now we are not going to be revisiting any of those past stories, there's too much cool stuff to mine. Although, look for a villain from waaay in the past appearing in ADVENTURES in April. Certainly, not one you'd expect.

Gareth Baker (Garethdutaralyn@aol.com) asks:
Where is Superman/Batman #1-6 meant to fit in?

Eddie: I take it you mean into continuity, not some overhead rack? It all takes place before SUPERMAN #200.

Phil DiMaria (philandmoe@yahoo.com) asks:
How big of a role do you feel Lana Lang should play in the current Superman titles and how do you see her relationship with Clark and Lois? Also do you expect President Pete Ross to be a major character?

Eddie: Lana Lang will be a big supporting character in Chuck Austen and Ivan Reiss's run on ACTION COMICS. Look to a new SUPERMAN SECRET FILES in June to see what role Pete will have.

Thanks again Eddie! We really appreciate you taking time to answer our questions.

Eddie: Always a pleasure.
