February 2002

John Clifford (Elflore@aol.com) asks:
I've heard that DC recently stopped taking unsolicited submissions from writers. If we're interested in comics writing, and even have a story idea mapped out (starring, say... Superman? And maybe his colleague Batman?), what advice do you have now on how we might go about getting our work looked at? Thanks!

Eddie: Great question, but unfortunately not one with an easy answer. It's never been easy for writers. True we're not looking at unsolicited material, but even when we were it was hard for a new writer to break in. An artist--penciller or inker--we can look at quickly and withing 5 minutes or even less know if he has potential or not. This is not the case with a writer. So the best advice for beginners is to break in with one of the smaller companies. Get a lot of amazing material under you, and we'll come seeking you out to write for us. This is how Brian Michael Bendis started.

Alex "Durton" Donnard (alexdonnard@aol.com) asks:
After Pete Woods and Carlos Meglia, who will be the next regular artist of "Adventures of Superman"? I saw on AOS #600 a picture from Leinil Yu, and it seems he would be a perfect Superman artist!

Eddie: Lenil would be amazing, but he has prior commiments at Wildstorm. But taking over on AOS in the Summer is Derc Aucoin, who did my favorite issue last year, "Adventures of Superman #599". You, the fans, had a good reaction to him, so he should be a great addition to an already impressive talent pool that's under the S.

Andre Hall (adjm23@hotmail.com) and Anthony Borrelli ask:
I was wondering what you guys are planning to do with Doomsday? (Please let ZOD fight him it would test him rrrreeaalll good!) In the 100th Anniversary issue of SUPERMAN, Apokolips took custody of Doomsday. I was wondering if we will see more of Doomsday? I don't mean just fight Superman, but since he became sentient, are there plans to explore and develop an actual personality for Doomsday? If so, when?

Eddie: Well, that's up to Darkseid now, isn't it? No current plans for D-Day, but we promise you, it will be big when he returns.

Imran Arifin (imranarifin@mailcity.com) asks:
While I can appreciate that Batman is the world's greatest detective et all, but is it necessary to make Superman seem dumb around the guy? I mean, Clark Kent is an award winning investigative reporter. Surely this would make him quite intuitive and much more in tune with today's reality. So why is Supes continuingly being portrayed as naive or slow witted when Bats is around?

Eddie: The bat-guy is intimidating, especially to a Kansas farm boy. But you know how it is when you're around someone that you think is really smart. For some reason you can't help, but act the fool.

Mathieu (joekerr@hotmail.com) asks:
What's the deal with Superman's fingerprints? Does he have any? I heard stories that he burned them with his heat vision. If not how does he manage not to leave prints? Is it his aura, a quick shake to smudge those prints? Or is it something that I don't suspect? It's something that I have been asking myself for years, please answer me with a satisfying and logical answer!

Eddie: Another great question, and one you'd think some super-villians would have researched. The aura does protect him from leaving fingerprints around, unless his hands are covered with ink or something. I guess when most people don't assume you have another identity, no one looks that closely.

Jason Fetterley (bigjayfett@hotmail.com) and Michael Adkins (titanstower@netzero.net) ask:
What is the likelihood of DC launching an ongoing series set in the early days of Superman's career? I just heard about Kevin Smith writing a new "Brave and the Bold" series with Batman teaming up with other DC heroes. Is there any chance of Superman carrying a team-up book in the near future (like the old "DC Comics Presents")? And is there any possibility of Kevin Smith writing a one-shot or mini-series starring Superman? Thanks!

Eddie: With "Brave and the Bold" it's quite probable that kevin Smith would do a Superman team-up there. As for the other stuff you mentioned, we'll see what the future brings.

Lawrence Masucci II (Superman-32@juno.com) asks:
Other than the Yellow sun of Earth and the Red sun of Krypton (and other planets with a red star) what is the affect of other color stars on Superman?? Like the blue-white star of Vega? Or if the star system is a binary (with two yellow stars)?

Eddie: The color relates to how much energy said star is giving. A red sun indicates a dying star, so there's not much power to be gained from it. A binary system with yellow stars would make Superman quite formidable or a bit mad as the dip into the sun did during "Our Worlds At War".

Jake Tucker (tuckerjh@vcu.edu) asks:
When Luthor became President, the evil genius-working-behind-the-scenes version of the character reached his zenith. Are there any plans to have Luthor fall from legitamacy and become the classic mad scientist in a prison uniform? It seemed that AOS #600 was maybe hinting at that.

Eddie: Yeah, didn't it? But for now he's the President, and until that changes we just have to keep him away from pretzels.

Nick Bilancia (nbilancia@msn.com) asks:
Any chance of seeing Mr Loeb and Mr McGuiness doing stories with Supes teaming with Flash, Orion, Hawkman, Green Arrow? Or battles with Darkseid, Genral Zod, or Ras al ghul? We'd all love to see their versions of these great characters!

Jeph Loeb: I think I'm reminded of my favorite line from Dumb and Dumber. Jim Carrey asks the girl he likes if there is a chance that they could get together and she says "One in a million!" and Carrey, gleeful, says "Aha! Then I still have a chance!"

There are no plans for any of the above, but they are all things that could happen in the future since Ed and I are big fans of ALL of those characters. Oh, and you WILL see The Flash, General Zod, and a few others in April's SUPERMAN #181 where Superman wakes up in Bizarro #1's body and Bizarro #1 wakes up in Superman's body. It am no fun at all!

Thanks Eddie! Thanks Jeph!

Eddie: Keep the questions coming. It's always a pleasure.
