How to Access James Gunn’s “Superman” Movie Director’s Commentary: A Step-by-Step Guide

Director’s Commentary

Many fans of James Gunn’s “Superman” movie have been frustrated to discover that the director’s commentary track isn’t readily available on their preferred streaming platform. While the commentary appears to be locked exclusively to Apple, there’s actually a workaround that allows owners of the film on any digital platform to access this coveted bonus content.

UPDATE: Recent user reports indicate that the director’s commentary is now accessible through additional platforms, giving fans more flexibility in how they access this content. While iTunes remains an option, users can now also access the commentary through the Apple TV app on mobile devices and the Fandango TV app, both of which offer more user-friendly interfaces than iTunes’ desktop software.

The Problem: Platform Exclusivity Creates Confusion

For movie enthusiasts who purchased Superman on Blu-ray, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango, or other digital retailers, the absence of commentary on their primary platform has been a source of significant disappointment. Warner Bros.’ decision to make the commentary exclusive to iTunes has created unnecessary barriers for fans who legitimately own the film elsewhere.

The Solution: Movies Anywhere Integration

Fortunately, there’s a legitimate method to access the commentary regardless of where you originally purchased the film. The key lies in leveraging Movies Anywhere, Disney’s digital movie service that connects libraries across multiple platforms.

Here’s How to Do It:

Step 1: Set Up Movies Anywhere
Create an account at moviesanywhere.com if you don’t already have one. For Blu-ray owners, this is where you’ll redeem the digital code included with your physical copy. Movies Anywhere serves as a central hub that syncs your movie libraries across connected platforms.

Step 2: Connect Your Retailer Account
Navigate to Settings > Manage Retailers and link the platform where you purchased Superman. Whether it’s Amazon, Vudu, or another service, connecting these accounts will merge your movie libraries.

Step 3: Choose Your Platform
You have multiple options for accessing the commentary:

Fandango TV App: Connect your Fandango account through Movies Anywhere

iTunes: Connect an iTunes account to your Movies Anywhere profile (requires downloading iTunes software and creating an Apple ID)

Apple TV App: Link your Apple ID through Movies Anywhere and use the mobile Apple TV app

Step 4: Access Through Your Chosen Platform
Once your accounts are linked, Superman should appear in your chosen app’s movie library. If the sync doesn’t happen immediately, you can manually download the film through the platform’s store (look for the “Download” option, not “Buy” – you already own it).

Step 5: Find the Commentary
Open the movie in your chosen app and look for the “Extras” button in the player interface. Click this to access a menu containing the director’s commentary track.

Technical Notes

Some users may need to authorize their device if using iTunes (Account > Authorizations) if they encounter access issues. The Apple TV app on mobile devices and the Fandango TV app offer more user-friendly alternatives to the often unreliable iTunes desktop software. While you can stream the movie directly through any of these platforms, downloading it locally may provide a more stable experience.

Industry Implications

This situation highlights ongoing challenges in the digital movie marketplace, where bonus content and special features are increasingly fragmented across platforms. For consumers who have invested in building digital libraries, these artificial barriers create unnecessary friction and frustration.

The Movies Anywhere service, while helpful in this instance, represents both a solution and a reminder of how complicated digital ownership has become. What should be a simple process – accessing content you’ve legitimately purchased – instead requires navigating multiple platforms and services.

For Physical Media Collectors

It’s worth noting that only Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray editions include digital copies – standard DVD releases do not. For many collectors, this Superman release may represent their first physical media purchase in years, making the commentary access issue particularly frustrating.

The Bottom Line

While Warner Bros.’ decision to gate the commentary behind iTunes creates an unnecessary hurdle, Superman owners do have legitimate access to this content through the Movies Anywhere ecosystem. The process is admittedly convoluted, but it works for anyone who owns the film digitally or has redeemed a Blu-ray digital code.

For fans eagerly awaiting James Gunn’s insights into his Superman vision, the commentary is worth the extra steps – you just need to know where to look.

Buy or rent “Superman” on Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Plex and Amazon Prime, or purchase your physical copy on 4K Ultra HD Steelbook + Digital, 4K, Blu-ray and DVD.

When I heard the commentary is only on digital I didn’t know it was only on iTunes. This does not make any sense to me. Plenty of people don’t have iPhones nor use iTunes.

Steve, do you think they will “in time” have the commentary on Blu-Ray disks and other digital options (like near Christmas time)?

Thanks for the reply Steve. Hate that it maybe longer until that happens but I’ll probably wait until then as I want the physical disk and the features too. 🙂

This does not work for me. I have my iTunes account connected to MoviesAnywhere and vice versa, the movie show up as purchased in iTunes but it will only play the bare movie with no extras of any kind. What am I doing wrong?
