Henry Cavill’s Mustache Goes Viral

As we reported yesterday, news of expensive “Justice League” movie reshoots were overshadowed by reports that the mustache Henry Cavill has grown for his role in “Mission Impossible 6” is causing problems for his role as Superman, with Paramount Studios unwilling to allow him to shave off the facial hair to film the additional scenes needed for Warner Bros.’ superhero film.

Social media and regular media alike have weighed in on “Mustachegate”, with many suggesting Paramount and “Mission Impossible 6” Director Christopher McQuarrie are being difficult. “Surely it’s easier to use a fake mustache than to digitally remove one!?”

Christopher McQuarrie has tweeted his own thoughts on the matter saying, “In exactly one year you’ll understand: The only way to keep a fake ‘stache on Henry Cavill would be a liberal dose of staples.” When you think about the car chases, helicopter scenes and other fast-moving action scenes they’ve been filming for “MI6”, his comment makes sense.

Meanwhile, fans everywhere have been having fun with the idea of Superman sporting a mustache, with memes, photos and videos popping up all over the internet.

On Superman I can’t stand it. A lot to take away from comic-con. The WB has announced their schedule of up and coming movies. They have apparently green lit eight of them. Not a mention of Superman. It’s like they have been going out of their way not to mention him. It looks to me like were all going to have to except that they have what appears to be “shelving” him after JL. A sequel for Suicide Squad???? Aside for Gal saying if your a Superman fan were going to be very happy with JL. That’s all good and… Read more »

In for a penny, in for a pound: digitally replace the entire actor with Brandon Routh, Tom Welling, Tyler Hoechlin, or my left sneaker. Someone with the requisite charisma.

Or digitally insert Christopher Reeve…

Jk but in all seriousness, in a universe with a really good Batman and and awesome Wonder Woman, Cavill’s Superman kinda looks like the weak link.

I blame the writers, not Cavill. They wrote superman to be stoic for some reason that I can’t fathom. Characters like that are boring unless you’re john wick. But of course, they’re going to blame it on the character of superman being boring. Typical. They gave more to ZOD and Batman in supposed Superman movies. He was dumb downed in BvS. This needs to change asap. I don’t get it, everybody knows he’s coming back, so I don’t know why they’re being coy about another MOS movie. That’s worrisome. I feel they’re going to make him like the hulk in… Read more »

While I agree that the writing/direction has been weak thus far, I also believe good actors can overcome bad writing.
Say what you will about Superman III and IV, and there’s certainly a lot to say, but Christopher Reeve (and Annette O’Toole in III) was good in them, and carried the character over the bad writing.
Cavill has the look, arguably more than any actor since Christopher Reeve (some might even say more), but in both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman he didn’t have the chemistry with his Lois Lane or the charisma to pull off the character.

You’d have to be a pretty epic actor to overcome 4 lines of dialogue.

while I agree that Chris Reeve made 3 and 4 infinitely better, I would not say that Cavill lacks charisma. I enjoyed him in man from uncle and I think he just needs the right material so he can shine. Routh had the same problem with writing that didn’t give them much to do or say. Like I said above, the problem is not superman, it’s the writers buying into the whole ‘oh superman is boring’ template that has plagued the character. Making him a silent hero isn’t a solution, it just makes for boring character development. I don’t know… Read more »

A couple of things: First the Moustache thing is actually hilarious. Cavill himself even poked some fun at it. Second, I just don’t get people saying Cavill has no charisma. Is he as good an actor as Christopher Reeve? No he’s not. I think he is clearly the best live action interpretation since Reeve. The others were simply Reeve impressions. This is the first live action depiction Post-Crisis Superman and I think a lot of people including Superman fans are having a hard time with that. Cavill does a great job in MOS the problem is that BVS was for… Read more »
