Henry Cavill Wearing Christopher Reeve Superman Costume

On the occasion of Henry Cavill’s birthday, Zack Snyder has shared a previously unseen photo of Henry Cavill wearing a replica of Christopher Reeve’s Superman costume.

The photo was shared on Snyder’s Vero social media account, and was taken back when Cavill was testing for the role for “Man of Steel”.

As far as I’m concerned, the suit that Henry wears, especially with the brightened up colors in the JL can’t look any better. I’m not dissing the older suit but it does look some what dated.

Each Superman actor has brought his own charm and regalia wearing the suit. And each decade differs. Times change…and so do costumes. Same thing with Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, J’onn J’onnz and Wonder Woman.

My only problem with the JL suit is that the shiny undersuit was too noticeable. Made it look weird IMO. Other than that, the Brightened colors really pulled it together

I thought that the S in JL was to sparkly. But I did like the color tone. As for this picture, it looks good, it makes me miss the classic S though.

The suit got progressively worse as the films went on imo. I think the MOS suit was damn near perfect. Colors could have been a little brighter, but even as they are I think they were fine. The BvS, and JL suits added too much padding, and muscle detailing in the suits where they just don’t look as natural as the MOS suit. I know the MOS suit had padding as well, but it wasn’t nearly as much, and looked much more in line with Cavill’s actual physique.

Yeh, absolutely. The shiny undersuit was really off-putting and distracting. Totally didn’t need it. I always thought the simpler the better. I loved the Man Of Steel suit and would have loved it even more if they had toned down the chainmail look a little bit. It’s also a shame to know underneath all those desaturated filters there was actually a quite nice and colourful looking suit.

I think Michael Wilkinson should have won an Oscar for “Best Costume” doing “Man of Steel”

I forget that Christopher Reeve was actually larger than Henry.

Both in height and weight (6’4 vs 6’1). Henry looks so skinny in that suit. Good thing he Bulked up later on.

Chris was also skinny, very skinny before bulking up for the role.

Zack couldn’t resist cranking the saturation down.

On Twitter someone pointed out to Dean Cain that it looked more like his suit than Reeves and he agreed with them, noting the S.

I don’t think it’s a Cain suit so much as its not a high quality replica of Reeves. The cape doesn’t have the bulk at the neck that it’s supposed to. That’s a Reeve S. Cain had a goofy looking one with a huge knob on the lower serif. IMO it looked like a caricature of the standard logo symbol.

Agreed. The blue material is also not shiny, which was a tell of the “Cain Suits”.

If I recall correctly, the Dean Cain suits were intentionally make to look “homemade”, with off the shelf leotards, Speedos, and boots. Then the “ironed-on” S shield. Something Martha Kent would be able to throw together in her hobby room.
I can see the similarities here. But then go look at the screen test footage of the suit they tried out on Christopher Reeve, and it’s on par with a mid-quality cosplayer at a Con.

They leaned into the “homemade” thing way too hard IMO. Cains belt and buckle looked like something from a middle-school home-ec’ class.

I mean I realize Martha wouldn’t have a Hollywood budget but I think a good looking classic Superman costume is not implausible as having been something she put together. I don’t really mind giving the suspension of disbelief for the suit being a bit slicker than “homemade”.

That’s fair. I prefer the costume from the pilot, which I bought as having been “homemade”. But life has gone on, so I guess it wasn’t as heart stopping as the Superman Returns costume (jk)!

Snyder definitely played with the saturation in this pic, but I love that it has a moody tone, similar to an Alex Ross painting.

Except Ross doesn’t detest color the way Snyder does.

It’s not that he detests color, it’s just adds to the aesthetic. Next time you take a pic with your phone, play around with the filters, you’ll understand then.

IMO, if the aesthetic he’s going for is a world drained of life (as well as one ashamed of being based on a comicbook) mission accomplished.
