Henry Cavill Talks About All Those Superman Rumors

On today’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket,” Henry Cavill spoke about his life in lockdown due to COVID-19, his role as Geralt on “The Witcher,” and all those rumors surrounding his return to the role of Superman.

Will you go back to playing Superman again? I googled right before we talked, because I needed the latest rumor. It is just rumor, after rumor, after rumor. What’s the wildest one you’ve heard about you and Superman?

They get wilder and wilder by the day. The amount of speculation, the stuff I read on the Internet, is extraordinary and sometimes frustrating. It’s when you see people stating stuff as fact. Like, “No, that’s not the case. That hasn’t happened, and that conversation isn’t happening.” But the important thing is that people are excited about it, and I think it’s important to be excited about a character like Superman. Superman is a fantastic character. If people are chatting about it, and even if they’re making stuff up, it’s okay, because that means they want to see the character again. And in an ideal world, I would absolutely love to play the character again.

Do you ever leave a comment on a rumor online using an alias?

I’m not going to lie; I’ve been very tempted, but there’s something about that, that feels deeply immoral. When it’s about Superman, and if I’m representing Superman, it just feels like the wrong thing to do. I’m just going to let this all play out. Me saying something isn’t going to make a difference. What does it really matter? One day, people will know the truth, and if they don’t know it now, it’s okay.

So does this mean that all those rumors that claimed that Cavill was coming back to play the role of Superman as a supporting role, are now just rumors again?

They will remain rumors until there is an announcement about a specific comment. Realistically speaking, we can’t know for sure until that happens. Cavill won’t come out and say “I’m still playing Superman in this and that”, he’ll keep his cards close to the vest, it’s the wise thing to do.

True. If he were to say anything about if he’s still playing the role he might get in trouble. I just wonder if WB will make an announcement on where they stand with his version. I also wonder what WB’s official stance is on his Superman. Is he still in the role or not according to them?

They won’t say anything either, for similar reasons. Their disagreement was money at first, reportedly at least, so if they can work that out they probably aren’t averse to giving him the role for a few guest spots. Whether or not they’d want him for a full series of solo movies is another matter entirely and, presumably, it’s something that goes beyond their like or dislike of Cavill.

So let me ask this question then, with the success of his Witcher series, would Cavill be ok with playing Superman but only as a Supportive character for another superhero? That is if any rumors about it is true. I don’t know if it is. I’m just asking.

I mean, look, I’m not saying you should do it; but adopting a secret identity and commenting on rumors and news stories that concern you might have a precedent in Superman mythos.

So what Cavill says in this article, is that if people keep talking about his Superman, then it means that they want to see the character again.
So if the same formula is applied to Brandon Routh’s Superman, then that means that fans want to see Routh’s Superman again.
So basically, bring back Routh as Superman for a HBOmax series WB!

They’re not going to spend the big bucks on any of these movies until the theaters come back on line or they’ve figured out how to generate a profit. That’s why they keep shuffling Wonder Woman around. And probably why they haven’t started Aquaman2. The virus as it is now, has certainly altered the need for close proximity in making movies making them challenging to say the least. Basically the whole entertainment industries on stand by.

True. I can’t argue about that. It’s still just too risky to make any movie or be in a theater to see a film at this time.

Still WB, there are a lot of fans that want a Brandon Routh Superman series on HBOmax. At least talk to the guy WB. I’m sure you could work something out. And if it means that I have to wait a little while to see Brandon’s Superman again because of the current health concerns, I’m ok with that. I’ve waited before to see Brandon’s Superman again for the CW crossover. I can wait again to see him as Superman. Trust me WB. Fans would love to see Routh’s Superman again.

I heard that fans can submit questions for the online panels at their website. I’ve been looking and I have no idea on how to send in any questions. Is there a way to send in questions?

I’ve always assumed as much, nothing came from a legit source that lead to anything substantial. Just looking at it realistically, he hasn’t been in the role for 4 years, according to this he hasn’t had any meaningful talks for all that time either. That being said, I think like everyone else, I want to see him in the cape again. But it’s not looking good, it’s looking doubtful considering WB has reached out to say Michael B Jordan to play the role. If Snyder Cut comes out next year and it’s received well, his role gets praise, then I… Read more »

At this time I don’t think any of that has to do with moving forward. It’s all about money. The entire entertainment (if you can call them that) industry is at a stand still with the virus dilemma. Things are shut down all over the place and re-cooping money invested in movies when theaters are shut down is a major challenge as well. That I believe,…. will be the driving factor moving forward.
