Geoff Johns and Kevin Feige Pay Tribute to Richard Donner’s “Superman”

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences paid tribute to the creative genious of Richard Donner on Wednesday at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California, recognizing the director’s contribution to the film industry over many years.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and DC Entertainment President and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns spoke together about the influence Donner’s “Superman: The Movie” has had, and continues to have, on the current crop of superhero films.

Superman: The Movie is still, to this day, the archetype of the perfect superhero film origin story,” Feige said, “and we watch it before me make almost any one of our films and that’s been the case for the past 17 years since I left the fold to go work for Marvel.”

I agree. Superman: The Movie is pretty much perfect. Good to see Donner get the credit he deserves.

It’s well-deserved; STM was the first time super-hero movies were taken seriously and were established as their own genre, even if it would take a few decades and some missteps before they became a tentpole mainstay. Whatever issues one might have with the movie now, I don’t think this is disputable.

Great dedication to Donner and STM, though I first saw Superman II with my dad in 1980, S:TM is STILL the standard bearer.

“Verisimilitude!” as powerful a word as SHAZAM!

Just goes to show that – be it Marvel, DC or whatever third party… it really doesn’t matter, as Superman, indeed transcends all and solely responsible for all (The Greatest of All time). Absolutely -NO Other individual(character) – can make that claim!!!

Thank you Richard Donner for realizing this!
