Warner Archive Collection has provided further details about the content in their special edition Blu-ray release of the 1984 “Supergirl” movie.
The two disc release not only includes the film’s International Cut remastered in High Definition on Blu-ray, but it also contains the rare Director’s Cut on a bonus DVD.
The new 2018 1080p HD Master of the “International Cut” of the film has a running time of 125 minutes (2 hours, 5 minutes), which is 20 minutes longer than the original theatrical cut.
The Special Features included in this Blu-ray collection include: “The Making of Supergirl” Vintage Documentary; Commentary by Director Jeannot Szwarc and Special Project Consultant Scott Michael Bosco; Theatrical Trailer (HD); Extended Director’s Cut (138 minutes) in Standard Definition on bonus DVD.
Ilya and Alexander Salkind continue to bring the lore and legend behind the World’s Greatest Super Hero to the big screen in this follow-up to the beloved Christopher Reeve Superman films. Helen Slater (in her screen debut) stars as the sensational Supergirl! Alright! I already own the Limited Edition, I’d love to have it on Blu-Ray.
When I saw this story, I immediately pulled my Limited Edition to do a quick comparison. Sad to say, but this blu-ray edition is a major disappointment. In fact, the only difference I see is that the international version has received the high definition treatment. Why not also convert the director’s cut to high definition too? All the special features also already appear on the Limited Edition. A sub-par effort, I don’t think this is a must-buy if you already own the Limited Edition. Hey WB/DC Films. It doesn’t matter what their going to do with this movie. It’s not going to improve it. This movie is a lesson in endurance to watch. I still can’t believe that the Salkind’s had a hand in this. The acting was cringe worthy in many places through out. And the story….good god was it bad. And a directors cut???? Please…….NO!!!
Its way better than Dawn of Justice – both versions.
Sorry…can’t let you get a way with that. Not even close, not even on the same planet. Not one item is better than DoJ. And yes, that’s both versions as well. There’s not one redeeming quality that it has, NOTHING! This movie is for the most part, far below Superman4. Cringe worthy and torture to watch.
Dark, depressing and dumb. Tell me “MARTHA” isn’t the most cringe worthy scene of all time. WB was desperate to adapt Frank Miller’s epic Dark Knight Returns when it had no right to exist in the DCEU, butchering not just a great story but half of Superman’s characters. Of all the DCEU films, DoJ is the one movie I will NEVER buy. Although they could have worded that scene better, that was only one small portion of the whole fight with Batman. So I’m not going to wipe out the whole sequence because of “save Martha”. I enjoyed BvS and can watch it any time. Especially the longer cut. As for Supergirl being made during the silver age, not sure what that means. For the Salkind’s to have had a hand in this movie one would have though it would have been on some level with Superman. Faye D’s performance was a total sham along with the absolutely stupid plot. The whole fight did not need to exist – at least not like that. Batman in the comics would never be forced to fight someone to the point of death, ESPECIALLY someone he didn’t even know. He would go so far as to learn every facet of his foe’s life to his secret identity, learn of weaknesses other than Kryptonite and of course there was no imminent threat that warranted death – like with Zod in Man of Steel, only nightmares and flashbacks to the events of MoS. Sorry you saw DoJ like that. I did not. I for one don’t want them to follow all comic interpretations. I never found BenA to be a weak actor. The Martha scene led to probably the best Batman beat down we’ve ever seen. Never the less. Supergirl is terrible beyond all comparisons. From a stand point of the entire movie there’s not one redeeming factor to it. The couple of sequences with Peter O’Toole are so bad that rinky dink is almost a compliment.
