First Look at Upcoming “Death of Superman” Animated Movie

Our first look at the upcoming new animated movie adaptation of the “Death of Superman” comic book story has come via a preview image featured on the iTunes Extras page for the animated movie “Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay”.

While Warner Bros. has yet to announce the cast or synopsis of the film, we do know that the upcoming 2-part animated movie will be a more faithful adaptation of the comic book story than the previous “Superman: Doomsday”.

No release date has been announced yet.

Here’s how I’m feeling: When this was announced, I was excited. Because I’m a Superman fan, but also because having a properly told adaptation of the Death/Return of Superman, one of the most selling comic books/graphic novels of all time, is such great news to hear. However, even before this image was revealed, I had forgotten about Teen Titans: The Judas Contract; a film based on a pre-Crisis classic DCU, but when they made the film version, they set it in the New 52 inspired DCUA. I had not taken into account that the same thing would happen here, and… Read more »

Am I not seeing something you guys are? All I see is a still shot of the cast. You seem to be extrapolating from that still, where Superman appears to be wearing his original suit (albeit Lois appears to be a man), that this is New 52. Where does that idea come from?

Granted its just a single photo. But the first thing that popped into my head was Archer.

Any idea on who plays the role of Superman? I hope it’s Tim Daily.

Also, will Superman’s look change at some point for his animated films since it has changed since rebirth? I don’t know what it will look like for this movie since we only got a picture that doesn’t show the entire design, only a part of it.

This is one of the most popular Superman story lines, it’s already been done in animation and the recent movies, but not the best.
I’d rather see For Tomorrow, Birthright, Last Son of Krypton, Earth One, Savage Dawn, American Alien or even the first run of New 52 Action Comics, H’EL on Earth and Batman Hush are all stories with Superman I’d rather see an animation adaptation of than Death YET AGAIN.

I would like to see rebirth/reborn made into a story. I think it has potential for an animated movie. I don’t know if they could include all of the story in one movie, but I’d see it if they make it.

I agree. The Death & Return storyline isn’t even that good. It’s more of an event than a story. The best thing about it was the genesis of the four “pretenders”, as well as some pretty good Lex II and Matrix moments. “Superman: Doomsday” lost steam in its second half, but it was sufficient for what it was. There’s much more interesting Superman stories to draw from. “Supergirl” does it all the time.

Did you read the novel by Roger Stern?
One of the best books I ever read and best non comic form book ever.

I hadn’t heard of it. Hmm, I’ll give it a shot, thanks for a heads-up.

I can see them wanting to take another pass at Death/Return since last time was a little lackluster for a few reasons (not least of which was those awful cheeklines on Superman) But I don’t really enjoy New 52 comic or animated so my interest is already down and then add to that equation that I don’t enjoy the current style Phil Bourassa is using for character designs. I understand the need to distinguish the look from the previous JL movies he worked on and Young Justice but the current DC animated stuff just isn’t any fun to look at… Read more »

Okay, stop. I could understand why they’d use the New 52 aesthetic two years ago, if they were trying to homogenize the look for consistency with DCU material across the board, but the New 52 is gone. Dead. No longer exists. Superman has gone through four different uniforms since then and he’s getting a new one in a couple of months. Even if this project started before the news of the classic costume’s return came out, the Reborn suit was a thing. A very, very pretty thing. Moreover, this single shot leaves much to be desired in regards to the… Read more »

So, in order to make a Death of Superman movie that’s closer to the source material, they’re going with the New 52 Superman? That makes a lot of sense…

Well for me, and I might be going out on the limb, but the last thing I want to see is any more “death of Superman”. We had it in the comics, had it in an animated movie and we saw it in BvS. I can’t take any more story lines that revolve around his death!

I thought, it being a 2 part story, that we would get a John Byrne Man of Steel origin sequence, and other events such as the Exile story, that introduces The Eradicator, and an introduction to Hank Henshaw and also possibly Cadmus. All this which leads to the Doomsday fight. With the Funeral for a Friend and then Return (with the possible Reign of the Supermen) for part 2… I see that we must now live in the New 52 universe… Such a shame… I hope they can make it work somehow. Also not a fan of whatever animation house… Read more »

I thought a big thing with these animated movies was that they tried to match the original artwork… which is why they claim that they won’t even touch Kingdom Come… but here we have not only a lack of the amazing artwork from that run (Jurgens etc.) but a new 52 look that was gone like 2 years ago. (And it looks like anime) I was really looking forward to this as an alternative to the lackluster live action movies (as they promised a proper adaptation), but now I’m just once again left with disapointment. Will Superman fans ever catch… Read more »

Remember the Superman 75th Anniversary Short from a few years back? The one that went thru Superman’s whole history? There’s a segment that honors Death, Return and even Superman Red/Blue. The animation looks like a series of Dan Jurgens drawings come to life. THAT was the art style I was hoping we’d get.

Now, I do enjoy this anime-esque work from Phil Bourassa, but I really wanted something more traditional for this story. Oh, well.

75th short had that 1940’s Roto-Scope Max Fleischer feel which still holds up nearly a century later

If we are lucky, this version of the death of Superman will be better than the one that they gave us in Batman v Superman. That movie was terrible! I say just reboot! In fact, just bring back the previous continuity, the Richard Donner verse, and Bring back Brandon Routh as Superman! Brandon’s version is by far way better than Cavill’s.

Bring back the previous continuity! Superman Returns deserves a proper sequel. I think Kate Beckinsale should play Lois Lane since Kate Bothsworth really wasn’t right for the part, nor is Amy Adams. Kevin Spacey can be Lex Luthor again. He is way better at playing the role of Lex Luthor than Jesse Eisenberg. And Bring back Bale as Batman for a proper Superman, Batman team up movie as well. Call it “World’s Finest”. In fact, recast the entire Justice League! New actors and actresses for the Justice League! Wonder Woman, the Flash, Aqua-man,Cyborg all recanted! Cyborg I feel really should be… Read more »
