First Look at Tyler Hoechlin’s New Superman Costume

The CW has given us a first look at Tyler Hoechlin in the new Superman suit for the upcoming series Superman & Lois which premieres Tuesday, February 23 at 9pm PT on The CW.

Tyler Hoechlin who plays Superman/Clark Kent says: “I find that the new suit is representative of the show. Just as this suit is unique and set apart from the ones that preceded it, the story we’re telling about Clark/Superman at this point in his life is unique and something we’ve never seen before. I appreciate the opportunity to wear the suit and the responsibility that comes with it. But it’s always interesting when I’m asked how I feel about “my new suit,” because I’ve always felt that the suit doesn’t belong to me; it belongs to everyone that finds some kind of meaning in that suit, in the symbol on the chest. I just happen to be the one wearing it. I come from the world of baseball and a line of coaches that always preached that the name on the front of the jersey is more important than the one on the back. Because when you wear that jersey, it represents not only you, but your entire team, and everyone that has ever worn that jersey that came before you. So when I wear the suit, that’s what it means to me. It represents everything that Superman stands for and has stood for, for almost a century now. And I look forward to carrying on that tradition.”

The new Superman suit, designed by Laura Jean Shannon and built by her L.A.–based Supersuits team in conjunction with Creative Character Engineering, has a classic, timeless vibe that both harkens back to the Superman we all grew up with while grounding him and elevating the suit in a modern arena with updated techniques and applications.

Shannon said: “We got Superman into some custom athletic inspired Super-Boots as a‘jumping off point’ and focused on a new neckline and cape to maximize the billowing and movement we all love to see in the books and films that have defined this character for generations. A streamlined muscle structure and updated paint job combined with some dynamic design lines and a sculpted armored belt all took his established custom fabric into a new direction to solidify the new look for Superman in Superman & Lois.”

STAY TUNED for our upcoming two-shot of Clark Kent and intrepid journalist Lois Lane coming this week. We think you’ll love that one too!

Definite improvement. Looks they went SR with his collar and attachment which is kinda swinging to the other extreme from his old one but I still like it better. The belt is a liitle more New 52 and less Reborn than I would like (and I still think trunks would work just fine but guess it’s still persona non grata despite having made a return in the pages of the comics).

Very glad to see thay his cape is more cloth and less of a heavy plastic tarp.

Also glad it’s no longer the plastic cape and weird plastic attachment!

A much needed improvement, but I’m not a fan of how the cape attaches like the Superman returns cape. It’s also got the high collar and smaller S. Still light years better than the plastic look the last costume had.

‘There Is no pleasing Superman fans!’ Lol nope we’re a fickle bunch haha

Yes! Better! Not perfect, but much better! The cape attachments are gone, thank goodness! The S insignia is smaller than I would like, but reds and blues in the suit are a plus. The belt looks better, but I do wish it had a yellow or gold belt buckle. I do have to point out that other CW superhero shows have had various versions of there super suits. Melissa Benoist has gone through various Supergirl suits. At least five. 1. Original 2.Red daughter 3.Space anti-kryptonite suit 4. Overgirl 5. Pants suit So I would say it’s very possible that we… Read more »

I can’t wait to see what Steve has to say about the new suit. I’m looking forward to seeing what he has to say with the comparisons with the old and the new.

And before I forget, WB,AT&T, please give us Superman fans a Brandon Routh Superman HBOmax series. There’s more than enough room for more than one Superman in the mutltimedia. Look at Batman for example. There’s practically going to be more than one version coming up in the movies so I’ve heard. Surely there can be room for Brandon’s Superman as well as Tyler’s and Henry’s versions. The multiverse is a pretty big place after all. 🙂 How about a Brandon Superman meets Henry Superman multiverse crossover film? Think of the success it could bring WB and AT&T’s HBOmax. Both have… Read more »

I like it a lot. It is a good balance between a few versions. Looking forward to it.

Improvement, certainly, but they always seem to go full speed ahead with the designs and then hit the breaks right before the finish line. That neckline is just wrong. I had the same problem with Routh’s suit, it looks like the costume’s trying to choke Superman. It looks suffocating and makes the actor look smaller in it. At least, unlike Routh’s, the extra texture makes it less visually dull, what with the tiny S sitting there all alone and scared. But my biggest complaint, such as it is, is the belt. There seems to be just *a little* gold there,… Read more »

Yeah, the belt does need a bit more gold or yellow. Maybe they’ll improve on it some more for season two or three. I do agree that the neckline looks a bit tight. Hopefully that’s another thing that they can improve on down the road. Is the cape made out of cloth? The material looks way better than his leather one. I’m so glad that the cape claps are gone. Two thumbs up for doing that! 😀
Overall I give it a 8 or 9 out of 10. Give or take.

It’s an improvement. In the picture above it looks a little less clunky than his original outfit. I’d prefer the red trunks, but then I’m old or something…

I prefer the classic look as well afriend. 🙂
Although this style I think does work for Tyler. It’s not perfect, but not bad.

Looks pretty good. After about the fifth episode he’ll be standing around in it more than anything else. CW doesn’t have the money do do proper justice to this character. End up just like SG. This will be worse, The Advebntures of Domesticated Superman.

The more I look at the new suit, the more I get excited and look forward to seeing this show. To quote a certain extra from Superman II, “ Man this is gonna be good!” 😀

Is the cape shorter? If so, I do think it looks a lot better. I wish we could see the boots.

Oh yeah. Looks definitely better. A good combo of SR and Smallville Season 11 costumes. While I had no problem with the other suit, I thought the attachments on the cape and S shield were silly. Well then bring it on.

I think Superman’s redesigned hella dope af new look pays loving homage to both his more traditional comic book one, as well as manages to mix in elements from DC Comics’ later New 52 era in the process (e.g, the cuffs, the belt, boots and cape length).
