In the latest Superman Homepage Member Poll we asked you the following question:

Who is your favorite live-action Mxyzptlk actor of all time?

This was a hard one for me to pick. I voted for Thomas Lennon as Mxyzptlk. Although Howie and Michael were also really good in the role.

My least favorite of Superman’s usual rogues, but I do consider the “what could have been” of Dudley Moore in an earlier draft of Superman III something of a missed opportunity.

I didn’t know that Dudley Moore could’ve played Mxy. That’s very interesting afriend.

Ilya Salkind wrote a totally insane (and probably unfilmable in the early 80s) early treatment for Superman III, with Brainiac and Mxy teaming up, Supergirl showing up (possibly brainwashed, let’s call that from questionable sources) and having a borderline incestuous relationship with Superman, and THEN Superman goes nuts and fights himself. Arguably, parts of it survive in the final film; Brainiac got watered down to being the apparently sentient supercomputer and Robo-Vera being the stand-ins for different parts of him. Gus Goreman is a (very) diluted pre-Crisis Mxy, being more mischievous than malicious. And Superman did in fact go nuts… Read more »

Yeah I heard about the Brainiac and Supergirl part, but I was unaware of Mxy. I like Superman 3 even though it has flaws. And Reeve always gave a stellar performance as Superman. Ah what could have been though.

I don’t think there’s ever really been a good live-action Mxy. I’d like to see them either cast a talented little person or use motion capture tech and give him Mxy’s golden-age look like what they used for STAS.

Mxy’s not a villain that can carry a movie or some big grand epic but I think he’s great as an episodic villain. In a way, he’s kind of like Q to Superman’s Picard.

I’ve always thought that if they portrayed him as a ‘Q’ type character from Star Trek: TNG, that it could potentially work. Absolutely agree that he could never carry a whole movie, but if he sets events in motion, I could see it.

Even when I was a kid reading the comics I couldn’t stand this character. His name is just as ridiculous.

His name is **supposed** to be ridiculous.
