Favorite Ma Kent – Poll Results

In the latest Superman Homepage Member Poll we asked you the following question:

Which actress portrayed your favorite live-action version of Ma Kent?

“Smallville” does it again! Annette O’Toole’s portrayal of Martha Kent was a clear winner in this poll with 53% of the votes. K Callan from “Lois & Clark” took second spot with just 18%. Our most recent Martha Kent (Diane Lane) was close behind with 17%.

And if you’re wondering why we specified “Ma Kent” in the question instead of just “Martha Kent”, in the 1950s “Adventures of Superman” TV series Ma Kent’s name was actually Sarah, not Martha.

Annette O’Toole is my favorite Martha Kent. Its funny, but I remember when Annette was casted I thought “Lana Lang is going to be Martha?” Then after 10 seasons of Smallville,I think “Annette is Martha”.

While Lois and Clark might not be my favorite version of Superman it does have my all time favorite scene with Martha Kent. I don’t remember the name of the episode but it’s shortly after Clark has revealed his identity to Lois. Martha stops by Lois’s apartment and I will never forget that when she’s sitting with Lois she says “This is the first time in 25 years I’ve been able to really talk to another woman about my boy.” That one just kinda kicked me right in the feels. Such a tender moment and K Callahan plays it great.… Read more »

I remember that scene. They really did make a great superman show. The writers, actors, and actresses of Lois and Clark the new adventures of superman really knew how to get the audience to care for these characters. What a terrific show that was.

I really loved that show too. Much more than Smallville. When I think about Smallville today I always wonder how could I like that show. It wasn’t suposed to be a superman show but in the end that’s what it was but on the other side it wasn’t a Superman show as well, it was a cut down version of Superman. It failed to show a real Clark Kent. While on the contrary, Lois & Clark (and despite having a full Superman version) managed to really show the real Clark, the one without the outfit. And they did an awesome… Read more »

Probably that’s the reason my favourite versions of the Kents are from Lois & Clark. And I really love Diane Lane’s version.

I didn’t really go for the camp and the whole “Moonlighting with a cape” approach of Lois and Clark but the show did have some heart to it. However it’s been my experience that even if there’s versions of Superman in comics or other media that I don’t like there’ll at least be some design or idea, concepts, moments or scenes, just some little something out of it all that works or that I just happen to enjoy even if the rest of it doesn’t hold together for me. Lois and Clark and Smallville are kind of like that for… Read more »
