Do you believe in the ‘Superman Curse’?
The overwhelming majority of Superman fans (68%) are having none of it. Fans say, “No, it’s just coincidence,” showing that most readers view the so-called curse as nothing more than Hollywood folklore and selective memory.
The “Superman Curse” has been whispered about for decades, citing tragic events and career struggles that have befallen actors who’ve portrayed the Man of Steel. From George Reeves’ mysterious death in 1959 to Christopher Reeve’s devastating 1995 horseback riding accident that left him paralyzed, from the career struggles of various Superman actors to personal hardships—believers point to a pattern of misfortune surrounding those who don the red cape.
However, our poll reveals that Superman fans are largely rational about such claims. They recognize that when you’re looking for a pattern, you’ll find one—especially when dealing with a character who’s been portrayed by dozens of actors across nearly a century of film, television, and serial productions.
Coming in second with 15% of the votes is “I’m skeptical but open-minded,” representing readers who don’t necessarily buy into the curse but acknowledge the eerie string of coincidences. This group likely finds the stories compelling even if they don’t attribute them to supernatural causes.
The results suggest that while the Superman Curse makes for intriguing discussion and spooky coincidences, the vast majority of fans see it for what it is: the normal ups and downs of life in Hollywood, viewed through the distorting lens of superstition. After all, playing Superman hasn’t stopped Henry Cavill, Tyler Hoechlin, or David Corenswet from thriving careers and seemingly happy lives.
