In the latest Superman Homepage Member Poll we asked you the following question:
On a scale of 1 to 10, how did you feel Superman was handled in The CW’s “Elseworlds” crossover event?
There was some controversy around some of the things Clark said to Kara in the final episode of the “Elseworlds” crossover event, and it rankled a portion of Superman fandom. While most loved the way Superman was handled, there was almost the same amount who hated it.
Here’s the complete voting breakdown:
- 10 - Loved it! 24%, 34 votes34 votes 24%34 votes - 24% of all votes
- 1 - Hated it! 23%, 32 votes32 votes 23%32 votes - 23% of all votes
- 8 13%, 18 votes18 votes 13%18 votes - 13% of all votes
- 7 11%, 15 votes15 votes 11%15 votes - 11% of all votes
- 9 9%, 13 votes13 votes 9%13 votes - 9% of all votes
- 6 6%, 9 votes9 votes 6%9 votes - 6% of all votes

- 4 4%, 6 votes6 votes 4%6 votes - 4% of all votes
- 3 2%, 3 votes3 votes 2%3 votes - 2% of all votes
- 2 1%, 1 vote1 vote 1%1 vote - 1% of all votes
Since there was a viewing of 2.13 million for this episode, I wonder what the percentage was for people who loved it and didn’t get to vote, and the percentage was for people who hated it who didn’t get to vote?
I ask this because 34 people voted for loving it, and 32 hated it. And since there were over 2 million viewers for this episode, there’s obviously a lot of people who didn’t vote.
No poll gets 100% coverage (just ask the US political voting system). But this is a good indication of the viewership.
Thank you Steve, for answering my question.
If we look at more than just 1 or 10 and break it up in the middle…
89 voted from 6 to 10.
51 voted from 1 to 5.
So it would appear generally positive. And there’s no way of knowing without further polling breakdown but I’d imagine a lot of the hate was mainly from Superman’s self-deprecation and not from a 1-level “hate” in general.
So it’s about what Superman said in part three rather than Tyler’s entire portrayal of Superman. If he hadn’t have said those things, then there would’ve been more positive votes I bet. He still does a great job as Superman though. I can’t wait for them to bring him back.
I think it’s less about Tyler’s portrayal and more about how it was written and not just in his conversation with Kara though I think for many that may have been kind of the straw that broke that camels back because it just underlined the writers obsessive need to downplay Superman when in presence of other heroes. Obviously the mileage varies wildly for folks on this site about this series from true-grit haters to absolute defenders (and that’s before getting into the whole politics thing) but I think for a lot of us the episode frustrating exactly because we were… Read more »
You have a point MattComics
Good points. And probably accurate as well. For myself I don’t have a degree of hate but I sure have one of dislike. From the first time he was used on Supergirl to this last time, they have redefined his role as Superman. And this time they brought along a laughable Lois role to boot. That’s why for me I don’t want to see him on Supergirl again. All they’re going to do is come up with more ways of having him involved in second fiddle appearances. Do we need that?…..IMO, NO we don’t!!
I thought his first appearance on the show was fine. He wasn’t diminished and they showed the dynamic of the two of them as family. The only thing I can think of that comes close is Alex’s comments about Clark abandoning Kara when Kara was thinking of leaving National for Metropolis which seemed really out of left field. But I don’t think that was talked about anymore after that particular scene.
They just need to go back to the way he was in episodes 1 and 2 of season 2 of Supergirl and part one of this recent crossover and he will be successful. I’m sure that they can fix their mistakes if they do that the next time that they have him on. He does a great job and I’m sure he’ll be back. He has a far to big of a fan base to just discontinue the use of this version of Superman. I for one can’t wait for them to bring back Tyler’s Superman.
To each his own redcape. I say we agree to disagree on this topic. That way everyone wins.
That’s odd. My previous post went to the wrong reply.
Not only is Supergirl a horrible UNsuper show, with terrible agenda driven writing, bad acting, derivative to the extreme rather than original, but it’s Superman and Lois are THE WORST! Completely not believable. And by that I mean that there was not a single moment when the Supes are on screen where I was able to suspend belief and enter their world. BLECCCCHHHHHH! What a missed opportunity in every imaginable way.
As I said before, to each his own.
They just need to go back to how he was in part one of this crossover and how he was in episode 1 and 2 of season 2 and he’ll be fine. I liked Lois, I just think that they didn’t do enough with her. We barely got to know this version of her. Hopefully they will bring her back for more character development. And I hope that they bring back Tyler’s Superman. He does a good job. It’s just the writing that needs fixing. It’s not Tyler’s fault that there were problems with the script. I say he should… Read more »
Here’s hoping they don’t decide to kill him off in COIE.
I really hope that they don’t MattComics, I really hope that they don’t.
The only way that story would work for me is if a different Superman would take his place, like Routh. I know that they are different Supermen, but they have established that more than one actor can play a superhero with Shipp having played his Flash in this crossover. If say Routh’s Atom character is somehow written off on Legends of Tomorrow but instead he replaced Hoechlin’s Superman with his own, then I’d been fine with it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of Tyler’s Superman, but I’m a even bigger fan of Routh’s Superman. If they have… Read more »
Please don’t think that I was disagreeing with you MattComics or that I was being disrespectful . I do agree with you.
No worries Spidey. I understood you. I don’t know that replacing Tyler with a previous Superman actor would be a way to go.
I mainly just concerned that reversing the original story to have it be Superman who dies in Crisis instead of Supergirl is an idea that the writers MIGHT view as a convenient way for the writers to solve their “problem”.
but I’m hoping they don’t and I’m really hoping they get out of this whole competition/over compensating for other heroes thing they’ve gotten on since his initial appearance.
Thanks MattComics, I hope so too.
