I was in the unsure/ undecided group because there’s basically nothing to go on yet for J.J Abrams if he is indeed going to be the next director for me to decide.
I’d be cautiously optimistic if he were attached, unless the “Flyby” script was in play…
JJ would make a passable, safe and crowd pleasing Superman movie. It’s not what I want by a long shot, so I firmly voted “No”, but it’s what everybody else wants, so I’m perplexed “Yes” isn’t higher than this. He’s a decent film-maker.
I wager people are cautious because of Flyby, but that was in a different era, when WB pushed for a lot of experimentation for maximum contemporary appeal. Flyby was a product of the post-Matrix world and that world is long gone.
I think a Superman movie SHOULD be a crowd pleaser and a crowd pleaser movie doesn’t have to mean a braindead effects fest just like a film having some meaning doesn’t have mean dour and desaturated grimdark angstfest. For me, Flyby stood out too much in my mind to vote yes. I could see the possibility of JJ turning in a good Superman movie but because of Flyby I have a lack of trust there. Also I have mixed feelings on current Star Wars. In the sense that I can enjoy them as an Elseworlds tale but I’m less enamored… Read more »
Absolutely not. I can’t believe this many people are on board with JJ he is just a middle of the line director for me, playing it safe and I don’t like his habit of making a film (or tv Series) that asks more questions than it intends to answer. (Lost… and how Luke’s lightsaber returned ‘a good Story for another time’). Eye roll. I really think wb messed up when they didn’t take advantage of a Cavill/McQuarrie team up. Jj will be Snyder 2.0 in my opinion. Sure, maybe he’ll play it safe and we get a decent Superman film,… Read more »
Has J.J said anything new
since last time?
Well Said Sundevil82. I agree wholeheartedly.
JJ may not necessarily be involved as a director. He may decide to be a producer (or exec. prod.) instead and contribute to the story as well as in the choosing of a new director.
So it’s still possible that someone like Brad Bird, Christopher McQuarrie, Matthew Vaughn, or whoever could be hired.
Mcquarrie would be my top pick followed by Bird and Vaughn.
JJ is the perfect director for this movie! The only thing that he has to stay away is from the script. He only has to direct and give us a very competent movie, that’s all and hire someone that can tell a good story I would recommend Geoff Johns but he has proven that he doesn’t understand the movie business
First and foremost they need a writer who isn’t cynical or ashamed of the character.
Absolutely 100%. This above all else Matt!
I heard that Routh was at one point in the running back when J.J was looking at possibile Superman actors.
Hey J.J, Routh still looks the part.
So if you get to direct the next Superman film, I recommend him.
