DC Hands Out Superman’s Red Trunks at SXSW

Fans were given their own pair of Superman’s red trunks as a gift when attending the SXSW convention this weekend, with the hashtag #TheTrunksAreBack prominently displayed on the rear.

With Superman returning to his classic costume as of “Action Comics #1000” next month, the giveaway boxer shorts were handed out to fans in attendance, with DC Comics co-publisher Jim Lee explaining, “even when we took away the trunks, we knew they were coming back. No one remains dead, no trunks remain unworn”.

So, it’s official that the underoos are back for good. Oh joy, now Superman can return to his rightful place as the @#$%^& joke of superheroes again.

What really is a amazing to me is that this “mockery” is totally based on a “false notion” of a “pair of belted pant-trunks” being undergarments, which is ridiculous.

The real true problem here was never Superman (nor his attire), but peoples negative, idiosyncrasies, attitudes and thought patterns as to “mock” something that isn’t “TRUE”…Wow, that is a -loser type mentality-. Epic Fail!

The trunks (that’s what any self-respecting Superman fan should be calling them not underwear or whatever) became a scapegoat for bad decisions made by writers and DC editorial and were never the actual problem. Not to say is there aren’t good costume designs that don’t have the trunks but treating them as some kind of horrible albatross for the character was always stupid. On the other side of it the trunks also kind of became in a weird way a symbol for fans who grew really sick of DC constantly blaming the character and feeling like they had to compensate… Read more »

Not that big a deal. I was fine without them and I thought the Rebirth uniform – with the red boots and the red belt/gold buckle – was a great update and I’m kind of sorry to see it go. But the classic look is the classic look, so I’m not going to whine about it. And furthermore I’m sure they’ll mess with the uniform design again in future, the next time DC decides it’s time to stir things up. Because that’s just an easy way to get people’s attention.

The only problem with the red belt/gold buckle was the needlessly funky design of it that made it really difficult to keep consistent from artist to artist. Red band with a round yellow/gold buckle would have more than sufficed. but in my opinion you never need to repeat the shield shape on the front of his body when he’s already got it prominently displayed on his chest.

This is totally not a marketing move for #1000 and the fourth subsequent soft-reboot in six years, it’s totally about bringing the character back to his roots and making him “true Superman”.

It’s a cute move, this giveaway thing, but I wonder how this does not reinforce the false notion that the trunks are underwear. These are literally boxers.
