Darren Aronofsky Interested in Directing a Superman Movie

In an interview with Darren Aronofsky for his new film “Mother”, CinePop asked him if he was interested in taking on any superhero films.

“I mean, you know, Superman would always be interesting.” Aronofsky explained. “But they’re already deep into reinventing him, so that’s not going to happen for a long time.”

However, he did proceed that comment by acknowledging that all the best superhero characters have already been done…

“Well I would always hope to do something unique.” Aronofsky added. “That’s kind of my goal. I think with those films, you have to be very careful, because they are about communicating with as big of an audience as you possibly can. Audiences who goes to see those films expect a certain type of movie. But I guess a lot of the great superhero titles are done, people have used them up. So now it’s kinda characters that aren’t as interesting. But you never know. We’ll see what comes my way.”

Aronofsky is on the record as having enjoyed “Man of Steel” even though it meant another director (Zack Snyder) got the chance to take on Superman ahead of him.

“Superman’s one of the holy grails. It’s Superman. It’s the best superhero,” he said. “Batman is great, of course, but it’s Superman. He’s the same level. That possibility was great. I thought Zack was a great choice, and I loved his Watchmen movie,” said Aronofsky. “I thought it was great. I thought that as a fan of the comic, you couldn’t hope for a better interpretation. I liked the orthodoxy of it.”

You can watch the entire CinePop interview with Darren Aronofsky below. The superhero question comes in at about 3 minutes, 40 seconds in.

Sounds like they’re auditioning for a new director. Vaughn should be picked in my opinion.

If they continue with the Elseworlds universe than sure I’d like to see something by him, but not in main continuity.

Absolutely not. He’d be just as a bad as Snyder. I think he’s of the same mind of Snyder, and just wouldn’t believe in the absolute goodness of Superman, and would have to put some dark, tortured twist on the character. Superman doesn’t need a unique take on him. He needs a straight up Superman movie with no BS.

There’s no such thing as absolute goodness. Or if there is there’s no version of it you can get everyone to agree on.

Regardless I believe that Superman in Snyder’s movies was fundamentally good. He just wasn’t perfect.

Not for me I’m afraid – he would be best suited towards a future Batman movie, but not Supes. Some of his films are great, but dark. We’re currently living in a world with some crazy dictators and other major world issues, we don’t need another dark Superman. I’m all for hope, a smile on the face, colour and freshness. A breath of fresh air. Matthew Vaughn for me.

He wouldn’t even be good for Batman. Again, much like Snyder he’d just want to contort these characters to fit whatever twisted vision he has for them. His ideas for Batman: Year One when he was attached to that is proof of it. The only comic book character he’d probably be suited for is the Punisher.

While his enthusiasm is wholeheartedly justified and accepted, I don’t think Superman is his forte. Mr. Aronofski’s strength and vision, in my opinion, is psychological complexity, suitable for one or the other characters from the Vertigo imprint. I love his films. Truly do. But Superman for him is just wrong. It’s like Paul Verhoeven wanting to direct a romantic comedy. I’d appreciate though what his offer brings to the table. If the jeans fit, don’t acquit.
