Actress Caity Lotz (who plays Sara Lance on the TV series “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”) has created a Social Media storm by calling for actor Daniel Dae Kim to be cast as Superman.
Lotz made the suggestion after seeing an animated GIF of Daniel Dae Kim removing his glasses on the red carpet at the 16th Annual Asian American Awards held earlier this week.

I’d actually love to see @danieldaekim as Superman https://t.co/QqTP6mmoPv

This sent the Twitterverse into a spin, with fans and fellow actors responding to the suggestion. Even Kim himself responded…
Thanks, @ChloeBennet4 & @caitylotz! #Superman is one of my favorites and I’m a big #HenryCaville fan. But yeah, we really could use a big screen Asian superhero, couldn’t we? #LookUpInTheSky #Someday https://t.co/RL7FTaYF27

While nobody is necessarily suggestion Daniel Dae Kim would replace Henry Cavill, I could definitely see him playing an older version of Kong Kenan from Gene Luen Yang’s “New Super-Man” comic book series.

Definitely fits the bill as The New Super-Man.
No absolutely not! Make him New-Superman Kenan Kong and I will actually be excited with that as I’m really enjoying the New-Superman issues, but not Clark Kent/Superman. It upsets me that people think that they can just change the race of a character just because. And before just in case anyone calls me a racist I am a Cuban male. I am not white I’m Hispanic. I also absolutely loved Lawrence Fishburn taking on the Perry White role and the girl that plays Iris West on the Flash. But please don’t change the main heroes. Side note – look at… Read more »
You hit the nail on the head.
It’s not like the movies or TV show continuity for these characters ever match up with the comics. Supergirl on TV isn’t the same Supergirl who is in the comics. The Superman who has appeared in the Supergirl TV show isn’t even the same Superman who is in the movies at the moment. So I have absolutely no problem with a movie or TV Superman being asian or even black for that matter. It’s just an elseworlds version of the character. Changing the look/appearance doesn’t fundamentally change the character. Why is skin colour, eye colour or hair colour being changed any… Read more »
“Why is skin colour, eye colour or hair colour being changed any different than having a bigger nose or being shorter or taller than other actors who have had the role?” The difference being, minor differences can be overlooked, but drastic changes can be glaring when they conflict with the preconceived notion how these characters typically look. Some characters are iconic and their physical attributes are part of their brand and marketing. Take the Hulk for example. The pigment of his skin is inconsequential to his character, but most people wouldn’t distinguish him from other comic book monsters if he was… Read more »
Wasn’t the Hulk originally grey?
Besides I think people can get used to changes over time. Heck Dean Cain was part Japanese I believe.
Dean Cain actually looks like Superman though, Daniel Dae Kim does not
Yes the Hulk was originally grey. Just like Batman used to carry a gun. And Superman used to dress like a circus performer.
I’m not saying characters can’t change or evolve, particularly when it happens within their own source material.
But we’re strictly speaking about TV and Movies, that try to adapt and capture the purest form of these characters.
So being able to remove a pair of glasses is the only requirement to be considered for Superman???
All kidding aside, I like Daniel Dae Kim from his days on Lost and I’m excited for his role in the new Hellboy. For what it’s worth, I think he’d also make a great Namor. I’m all for anybody being able to at least try out for any role. Nothing wrong with a little competition to be able to truly find a suitable candidate.
NO….don’t want Asian Superman, Black Superman, Ethiopian Superman, or any other race Superman at this point. We just want a great sequel to Mos. Any thing else at this point is a ridiculous concept. Henry is Superman!! Next thing you know were going to be arguing over what breed of dog Krypto should be.
I’ve always hated the whole race-changing argument because if you disagree, it’s so easy for people to label you a racist. But I’m not against it because of race, I’m against it because of appearance. Some characters have an iconic appearance, the public has a preconceived idea of what they should look like. Superman is one of those characters. I don’t care what race the actor is, as long as he looks (and acts) like Superman. I wouldn’t be able to accept a dark skinned Superman, just like I won’t accept a fat Superman, or a blonde Superman, or Superman… Read more »
Did they say what media he would be considered for? Movie or tv? Does Caity Lotz know that there are currently two actors playing Superman(Henry Cavill,Tyler Hoechlin)? I would think she knew about Henry, but maybe she might not know about Tyler if she’s mostly working on her show. It is possible that she doesn’t watch Supergirl.
I really think that this is just something that Caity Lotz wants to happen and that there really isn’t any indication that it will happen. Maybe one day, who knows? I don’t think that it will happen anytime soon though.
I love Daniel Dae Kim but Superman has to look like Superman.
Eh, I don’t care either way. If you asked me ten years ago, I’d take issue on the grounds of loyalty to the source material, but I got over it. Kim’s way too old, honestly, but I generally don’t care. At the same time, though, I don’t trust modern Hollywood to do this type of casting without virtue-signalling, which instantly makes me suspicious of any shift from the traditional and isn’t that extremely sad for everyone involved.
So, yeah, I’m fine with the idea in principle, I distrust the current political climate to be accepting of it, though.
What other movies was this actor in? I’m not familiar with his work.
