John J Sikela

Artist John J. Sikela died March 23 at the New Life St. Joseph Hospice in Lorain, Ohio. Sikela was 91 and had worked as an illustrator for DC, including work on SUPERBOY #1 in 1949 and a long run on the title through the latter half of the 1950s. He also illustrated several stories for ADVENTURE COMICS and ghosted some early issues of SUPERMAN for Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. According to Ron Goulart's Encyclopedia of American Comics, Sikela was also the artist of the Siegel and Shuster series Funnyman in both its comic-book and comic-strip forms. Sikela was born in Slovakia and had lived in Avon, Ohio, for 50 years. Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans.
